Tech support had remote assistance on my computer today for five hours and still could not fix my problem. Any help is appreciated. I cannot download any updates of any kind as the windows installer will not work.

    Try THIS.

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

    Restart the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file (in Notepad), right-click the file (before opening it) and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

You did restore the Windows Installer service registry settings to default before (for Windows 7)?

    OK.

If you did not restart your computer yet, please do.

    Then, try Windows Update again.

The Windows Installer service starts by its own when needed. Otherwise, it's Stopped and Manual by default.

So, the file was successfully merged to the registry? You did get the prompt, right?

Go back to your services and make sure the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is Started and Automatic. The Windows Installer service depends on it.
