If I wipe and reload other people's windows, what do I need to guarantee a valid reinstallation if the license is not on the computer?

Usually the license key is on a sticker, bottom side of the computer (laptop's) and on the side or back of computer for towers. If the key is not there, you will need to use a program like product key explorer to extract the key before the wipe. I hope this information helps.

I have the extracted number. I tried to install it but it said it was invalid.

If you extracted the number, since it is so long, you could have documented it wrong.

    I hope this information helps.

I double checked. It is the right number.

Does that mean 100% that the number is invalid?

Only other thing to do now is confirm with Microsoft that it is correct. They can help further with that product key.
