    Hello

Is it Spam/spim? A Worm? Something to REALLY worry about?

I do not have many MSN contacts. All are either for business or for my duties as an Official website admin for a PC game.

I clicked on a link that appeared in my Windows Live messenger thinking it was one of my contacts as: "http://(contact's msn mail id) . myc00lfriends.info" Thought it was a legitimate link to a pics webpage of his.

Instead It led me to a website saying my MSN Messenger was not connected and asked for my login/password. Looked legit and it took me to a page advertising "Ringtones". I remember looking down at my McAfee SiteAdvisor...and it showed "Green".

I closed it and sent this person an offline message about this "link" about Ringtones. Several hours later, he replied it was bug or spam. Knew nothing more about it except most people ignore it. Later, another contact asked me about a similar link from me!

I started looking this up and found the first reference in "General Security" forum http://forums.techguy.org/general-security/698312-help-am-i-infected-some.html where this person did a similar thing. But after he went through all the steps given...found nothing.

But after going through a Google search and reading other similar MSN Messenger Spam, it might be a possible Worm after all.

I notified the original contact and the second one on what I could find. To scan and check out their systems before it sent out anymore spam to others. So far I have not heard back from any other MSN contacts on getting similar spam links.

    My computer is a:

    Dell Inspiron 350
    WinXP SP 2 Home
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    320Ghz HD
    512 Nvidia 8300GS
    1 Gig RAM
    Satellite connection

FireFox is my default browser (latest version) although I have IE 7 installed.
    Spybot S&D
    Ad Aware 2007
ZoneAlarm Free and AVAST 4.8 Free

    Steps I took:
    Spybot S&D
HouseCall 6.6 online scan (it found 8 "grayware/spyware" but could not complete a full fix due to internal error)

Began downloading Panda when my AVAST 4.8 detected it having a Win32:CTX virus
But forgot to turn off my AVAST, though. Got the files later but have not gone through the full scan there yet.

Found out my Log is fine.

Although I keep all my security programs updated regularly. I did perform a Disk CleanUp in my Windows Temp folder just in case something was there. (With some, this is all that's needed I came to find) No contacts asking about strange links with my msn id in the mix.

Changed my password. First and only time I ever had this happen through my messenger. Ain't gonna get burned again.

Learned that a few McAfee SiteAdvisor's "Green sites" could be compromised if done by a third party. But the plug in is still useful as a guide to sites honest by nature. Going to install "Haute Secure" later as additional security.

I do understand trying to get to everyone needing help is not always possible. With so many new and old narsties still out "there" to infect with, it is no wonder you feel overwhelmed.

Tech Support Guy forums is one of the best (y) Appreciate your help with past problems and still refer your site to others as "the" place to to :D

    "Once more into the Breach!"
