My girlfriend has a Windows 98 Dell and when I went to look for Windows Updates it just locks up the machine. I can CRTL-ALT-Del and get out of it once, but a second try requires a reboot.

I have tried all the regular stuff . . . emptied the WindowsUpdate directory, emptied and deleted WUTEMP, cleared all temp files, temporary internet files, etc. I did regsrv32 iuctl.dll /u and then deleted IUCTL.DLL and IUENGINE.DLL. I even reinstalled Windows 98 SE over itself - no help!

I have tried this with only Explorer and Systray running (shut everything else down first). Did not work.

Any new ideas? Thanks.

Hiya

Lets see what you have running 'behind the scenes'. go to http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Regards

I have run SpySweeper, Ad Aware SE and Spybot 1.3 and they only found a few cookies. I also ran HiJack this back at the start and the only BHOs I found were for Symantec, Adobe Reader and Spybot. There was not any other "nasty" stuff that I could see, but I will cut and paste once I get back to the computer (tonight). I am also going to run a full Trojan scan with TDS-3 - just to be sure.

It will also tell us what programs you have running at startup. In the log when you run it, it will be in the 04 entries. There may be a conflict with one of them.

This one is closed. Thanks for your help Eddie5659 but the solution ended up as follows. I got a tip from a friend regarding loadQM.exe. He claims it is required/closely linked to Windows Update. I had only heard of it being a slowdown program associated with MSN Messenger, but I was running out of things to try.
I installed MSNM and now Windows Update works fine. I don't know if it was the loadQM or something else that installing MSNM corrected in its installation, but it did it. I am tempted to uninstall MSNM and see if Windows Update still works, but she wants the Messenger anyway so I guess I will leave it. I am glad to have this one closed. Just when you think you've seen all the Windows 98 fubars one can find . . . ;-)
Thanks again.
