I hope i am not doing something against the rules but i had posted a thread in the hardware forum and then figured it should be put here but could not figure out how to move it. unless only moderators can do that.

my problem is i need to install a ton of windows updates (34) on my computer at work which i had to reformat. it will take forever on my dial up connection at work

I have the same exact XP Media Edition OS on my computer at home that is current as far as the Windows updates. Can I copy these update files on my computer at home onto a flash drive and then install them on the computer at work?

I did a search using KB and it looked like i found those files or at least most of them.

Hi, I think you are on the right path, but you need to use the Windows Update site just a bit differently...use the Catalog, it has a Download Basket and you can pick what updates you need, and download but NOT install them as they normally would automatically...you can save them to the flash drive, you don't want them in any folder though....take the drive to work and install them to the needy pc.

A newer term for doing this, sometimes making a Windows Installation CD and including patches, updates, tools etc is slipstreaming.

Here is what I mean:

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Windows-Update-Catalog.html

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166

http://www.theeldergeek.com/windows_update_catalog.htm

I've burned updates for 98 and ME to CD using this method and it works, but= you have to be careful with subfolder nesting length, as the burning software will only go so deep (about 8 folders deep) without giving problems during the burn, though there is a workaround for it. That's why I told you not to make a new folder on the flash drive.

Thanks a lot Byteman

I think you made my day. This will be a lot easier than taking the computer home and getting it hooked up to my cable modem.

Have a great day

Hi, You're very welcome! By now I supposed you have downloaded the files, if you look at them in Explorer, you will see what I mean by "Folder nesting"...they expand down about 5 +'s each, then you get the the .exe file. Hey, I will mark this Solved for you, next time, just use the "Thread Tools" button when you want to show that your thread is done, at least for the moment- You can still reply here if you wish. And= have a great week yourself! (y)
