    Hey TSG,
I have a HP Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 32.
Within the past week it has started hanging as soon as the computer boots. Any application that I boot only works for a short period of time and soon crashes. I ran Spybot and it removed everything it found, however the problem still resumes.
The computers works perfectly fine upon booting into safe mode. I tried System Restoring the computer to a earlier date (before this started happening) to no avail. I am completely confounded as to how I should go about resolving this problem. I would prefer to not have to reformat the computer, so I would like to explore other options first.
    Thanks a lot,
    MKS

    • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    Thanks for the response.
The only way I can boot into Windows normally is by turning off most of the Services in MSConfig so some data might be missing? Because if I boot in with all the services enabled the computer immediately hangs and .exe won't run.

Which services did you have to disable?

Cause at first glance, the log really doesn't look half bad. There are a few things we can fix.

If we need to run anything, we're gonna have to run them in Safe Mode with Networking I assume.

Was any new software or hardware added to the computer when the problems started? Any new updates applied?

I disabled everything, but I'm in the process of slowly turning them back on to try to isolate the cause.
I was away for a week, and left the laptop off during that time. When I turned it on a week later these problems started occurring.

That's good. That's actually the best way to decipher the issue. It's like trial and error.
I usually start by disabling all services except Microsoft ones. Then one at a time, turn one back on to test it.

In the meantime, you can fix these entries.
And you can do this in Safe Mode, of course.

I'd also uninstall anything to do with iMesh.

    Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

    Reboot.

You can also go into msconfig and disable programs at Startup. Especially the unnecessary ones.
One of those could be causing the issue too.

I have fixed the entries you specified in HiJackThis.
In my case, it is actually the Windows Services that are giving my issues. I enabled my startup process and everything ran fine. Then I turned on everything BUT the windows services and it still worked fine. However as soon as I turned on the windows services the issues arose. I'm slowly going through the windows services right now but it's slow going and I don't know how many of the services are causing the issues.

I've removed a few services that seem to cause this issue and now the computer boots up into Windows fine.
But, I just clicked on the Windows Update icon and immediately the computer froze. Should I just disable windows update?
    Thanks

For security reasons and vulnerabilities, you shouldn't. Unless you choose to turn off Automatic updates.
Sooner or later they should be manually applied to keep you safe.

I have a friend with a similar problem. She did an update and her computer went into constant reboots.
We did a system restore and she just won't do any updates (as of now)

    Okay. Sounds good.
Any idea why certain services cause issues?
Thanks a lot of all the help Cheeseball.

It's likely a problem with the Operating System. Probably needs to be wiped clean.
