Solved: Windows Vista: Windows failed to start

My aunt gave me a computer that stopped working. The computer won't load Windows. It's a Gateway Desktop; model # GT5430E. It runs Windows Vista Home Premium OEMAct. She didn't have the disks, so how would I go about fixing this problem? Thanks

I keep getting the following error:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."

3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status: 0xc000014c

Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.

keep tapping f8 when you press the start button you want the boot options menu

if you get the disk options tap a bit further into the boot

on the boot options screen try

last known good configuration

if no good then use safe mode with networking

in safe mode bring up the cmd box and run

sfc /scannow

Thank you for your help. I was able to borrow a Vista cd from someone; I repaired the operating system with it and everything is working fine now.
