    Good afternoon,

I promised a friend I would take a look at their PC to see if I could find why it was running slow.

I have ran MalwareBytes and AVG and have allowed these programmes to remove a few tracking cookies and a couple of Trojan's (have log files saved if required).

The PC is running Windows XP Service pack 3.

After the scans there is little difference really and to be honest I don't know where to go from there.

I have ran HiJackThis and have a log file if this needs to be posted please advise.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The main reason your computer is running so slow is because you have two antivirus programs running at the same time, AVG and Symantec. Never install more than one on a computer. It'll slow it down, make it freeze, and there will be conflicts between both programs. It might even render your computer more vulnerable to malware.

Your version of AVG8 is quite outdated. The latest one is AVG 2011.

To remove AVG, use the AVG Remover.

To remove Symantec (which I strongly recommend) run the Norton Removal Tool.

I would replace those antivirus programs with Microsoft Security Essentials or the free Avira Antivir. Only one though!

    Run HijackThis again.

Select Do a system scan only.

    Click Fix checked.

Next, you need to trim down that severely bloated Startup directory.

Download and run (no installation required) the free StartUpLite. The program allows you to disable unnecessary startup entries from your computer.

Run the program and choose the Disable option for the items displayed.

    ===================================================================

When all done, please post a new HijackThis log.

Thank you very much for your help ! Much appreciated.

I just noticed the Symatec programme when scrolling through the add / remove programme list and was kinda kicking myself I hadnt spotted this, as you say, running 2 x antivirus programmes can slow and make system even more vunerable.

I will do the above and revert back with new scan log.

    Thanks again for your help.

Be sure to run the Norton Removal Tool. Symantec/Norton is quite a pain to remove and can cause a lot of problems, especially to your Internet connection, when not properly uninstalled.

Doesn't look like you ran StartUpLite??? It will make an even bigger difference.

    Run HijackThis again.

Select Do a system scan only.

    Put a check mark on:

    O2 - BHO: BrowserHelper Class - {8A9D74F9-560B-4FE7-ABEB-3B2E638E5CD6} - C:\Program Files\SGPSA\SearchAssistant.dll

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: avgrsstarter - avgrsstx.dll (file missing)

    Click Fix checked.

Go into these 2 temp folders:

    C:\WINDOWS\Temp

    C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

Once they're open and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING from inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

It's all junk and is a good place for "nasties" to hide.

After you're done, restart the computer.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Go into the C:\Program Files folder.

If folders for AVG and Symantec are still present, delete them.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi.
I thought for one horrible moment that it was the previous computer problem.
Realised it is a different machine.

Firstly sorry for the delay in getting back I've had an extremely busy time recently and have hardly had chance to do anything for myself let alone others :(

Flavallee - I did as you said and all clear in there as you said.

Phantom - I didn't see your post until after I had ran the hijackthis scan and the scan was as follows ( I have ran Startup lite and the difference was unreal !!!!!) :

Unfortunaty, it could be even more unreal... :D

StartUpLite misses a lot of unnecessary Startup items.

Click Start > Run > type msconfig.

    Select the Startup tab.

    Uncheck the following entries too:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ehTray] C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOL_Demo] C:\Applications\Tool\AOL Demo\DSGDemo.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [High Definition Audio Property Page Shortcut] HDAShCut.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SkyTel] SkyTel.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SMSERIAL] sm56hlpr.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RTHDCPL] RTHDCPL.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpeedTouch USB Diagnostics] "C:\Program Files\Thomson\SpeedTouch USB\Dragdiag.exe" /icon

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Photo Downloader] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.2\Apps\apdproxy.exe"

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PAC7302_Monitor] C:\WINDOWS\PixArt\PAC7302\Monitor.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EEventManager] C:\PROGRA~1\EPSONS~1\EVENTM~1\EEventManager.exe

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Power2GoExpress] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Power2Go\Power2GoExpress.exe" /Startup

    O4 - Global Startup: Kodak EasyShare software.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\EasyShare.exe

    O4 - Global Startup: KODAK Software Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe

    O4 - Global Startup: Ralink Wireless Utility.lnk = C:\Program Files\RALINK\Common\RaUI.exe

    Reboot the computer.

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

NOW it should be unreal! :D

So, actually, the only entries you need are:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avgnt] "C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avgnt.exe" /min

    And,

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Recguard] C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE

    Also, run HijackThis again.

Select Do a system scan only.

Put a check mark on the following entries:

    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)

    O2 - BHO: XBTBPos00 - {FCBCCB87-9224-4B8D-B117-F56D924BEB18} - C:\Program Files\Fast Browser Search\IE\FBStoolbar.dll

    Click Fix checked.
