My pc has become extremely slow over the last couple weeks. I'm wondering if anyone can help me clean up unnecessary programs and such. I routinely use ccleaner, I run AVG, and a few other spyware blockers...not sure if I need them all, or what the recent speed issue is from?
I downloaded the most recent HJT, and here is the log, let me know what else you need to know if anything.

First of all, you need to be patient and wait for a reply. We're all volunteers and don't spend 24/7 on these forums. We sign in at our own pace, browse through the numerous threads that are posted every day, and then decide which ones to reply to. I just happen to be the first person to reply to your thread. ;)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Go into Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Logitech Desktop Messenger or Desktop Messenger(however it's listed).

After it's been uninstalled, go into the C:\PROGRAM FILES\LOGITECH folder and delete the entire Desktop Messenger folder - if it's still there. Make sure you don't delete the LOGITECH folder!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

After the above has been done, restart your computer.

Run a new scan with HijackThis and then post that new log here.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the processor type and speed, and how much RAM is installed?

What peripherals(printer, scanner, camera, webcam, iPod, etc.) are you using with your computer?

follow flavallees instructions then do the following
a good place to start is to clean house . ATF-Cleaner is a nifty free little program to delete all temp files cookies and a general cleanup . http://www.snapfiles.com/get/atfcleaner.html
startup programs is another reason for poor and sluggish proformance . I have only four in the startup but I see you have over 30 . That is way to many . Check this; http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml , and look here too; http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm , and click start, run, and then type in this; msconfig.exe to open up the System Configuration Tool, then click the startup tab, which also shows what starts and runs with XP. uncheck what you don't want to start up . And here is a helpful site to trim down some services; http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
When done run defrag . Now paste Hijackthis log back here . Hope this has helped .

Ok, I know I have WAY too many startup programs, and when I look at my task manager, it scares me half to death. I don't know what some of the things are, so I don't know if they are safe to remove or not. Likely if I can get help with those it will solve most of the problems. I am working on the requested info.
Had internet problems, but I am back on now (obvious I guess since I am posting...hmmm).
    I'm running a dell dimension 3000, Pentium 4 with 3 ghz, 512mb of ram.
I have a printer/scanner/fax, wireless mouse and keyboard, webcam, speakers, and my mp3 player (unless I'm not at the computer and I'm using it) plugged in.

once I remove some other crap, i'll restart, do a defrag, and post the new hjt. I'm hesitant to remove anything from startup until i get some specific advice...the ones I use, are the ones I know what the name is...the others...I need help with. my msn, avg, spyware and other blockers, I use (although if they are overkill, let me know).

    thanks

Print off these instructions so you can follow them more easily and not miss anything.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Get rid of the current version(1.99.1) of HijackThis that you're using because it's a very old version.

Go here to download and install the current version(2.0.2).

Allow it to install in C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe and to place an icon on the desktop for easy access.

Don't run a scan with it yet.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

    Remove the checkmark from:

    igfxhkcmd hkcmd.exe

    igfxpers igfxpers.exe

    HotKeysCmds hkcmd.exe

    DVDLauncher DVDLauncher.exe

    IgfxTray igfxtray.exe

    Adobe Reader Speed Launcher Reader_sl.exe

    QuickTime Task QTTask.exe

    SunJavaUpdateSched jusched.exe

    swg GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe

and then click Apply - OK, but don't restart your computer yet!

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the Services window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on(or right-click on and then click Properties):

    Adobe LM Service

    Boonty Games

Brother Popup Suspend Service For Resource Manager (brmfrmps)

    BrSplService (Brother XP spl Service)

    DSBrokerService

    Google Updater Service (gusvc)

    Process Monitor (LVPrcSrv)

    LVSrvLauncher

    MD Simple Burner Service (NetMDSB)

    PACSPTISVR

    PHPGeekUtil

    SupportSoft Sprocket Service (dellsupportcenter) (sprtsvc_dellsupportcenter)

    Sony SPTI Service (SPTISRV)

Change the setting from "Automatic" to "Manual" and then click Apply. You have to do one entry at a time.

Close the Services window and then restart your computer.

When the small SCU window appears on the desktop during restart, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it and then click OK.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

After the above has been done, run a scan with HijackThis 2.0.2 and then post that new log here.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Fix these too.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
    3. Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
    4. In Additional Scans section put a check in BotCheck and Disabled MS Config Items and EventViewer Errors/Warnings
    5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
    6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
    7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
    8. Save that notepad file
If the log is too large to post, use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

The old version installs in C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

The new version installs in C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe because it's now owned by Trend Micro.

You didn't know that though. That's why the new version didn't overwrite the old version.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

I just now noticed that you posted your first log with 2.0.2 and your second log with 1.99.1.

Ditto! Don't ignore Cybertech's instructions. Working on the SCU and Services lists can wait a bit.

You still have a trojan item "tmp_t0.dll". We need a Malware Removal expert to help you remove it.

I see you have several credit union sites in your trusted zones. That may indicate you are using this machine to access your banking. Not a very good idea while also using P2P programs! ie: BitTorrent and LimeWire. File sharing/P2P programs rely on members giving and gaining unrestricted access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. It also exposes you to very malicious worms and trojans. You change those risky default settings to a safer configuration but the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection.

Start OTScanIt. Copy/Paste the information in the Code box below into the pane where it says Paste fix here and then click the Run Fix button.

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.
    Post that information back here.

I will review the information when it comes back in.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. alternate link 1 alternate link 2
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
