I'm not sure if this is the right forum because both Windows (XP) and Internet Explorer have really slowed down during the last several days. I have updated and used AVG, Spybot S&D and Webroot's Spy Sweeper but have found no virus or spyware infestation. I would appreciate if my computer's Hijackthis Log could be looked at by Tech Support Guy's experts to see if they can detect anything out-of-the-ordinary. Thanks in advance.

Well obviousley im not an expert (duh, look at the amount of posts lol) but i had the same problem. I checked my BIOS and my L2 cache was turned OFF for some reason. So i switched it back on and BAM it worked nice and fast again. Give it a try, if that doesnt work i have no idea :D

Hi referee07,

I received your e-mail and although the L2 cache is not my area of expertise, I did find this article on Microsoft's site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q183063/

They state:

"This is not related to the hardware; it is only useful for computers with direct-mapped L2 caches. Pentium II and later processors do not have direct- mapped L2 caches. SecondLevelDataCache can increase performance by approximately 2 percent in certain cases for older computers with ample memory (more than 64 MB) by scattering physical pages better in the address space so there are not so many L2 cache collisions. Setting SecondLevelDataCache to 256 KB rather than 2 MB (when the computer has a 2 MB L2 cache) would probably have about a 0.4 percent performance penalty."

Download Cleanup from Here
  • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
  • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
  • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
  • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
  • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
  • Click OK
  • DO NOT RUN IT YET

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install ewido.
  • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Run Cleanup:
  • Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
  • Once it’s done, close the program.

Go to Control Panel - Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Do a Panda Active Scan. Be sure to save the log it creates.

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the logs from the Ewido and Panda scans.

Referee07:

Your computer has several programs that are loading during startup and running in the background that don't need to be. Other than the antivirus program and the firewall program, very few others need to load and run.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - "Startup" tab. Each entry listed there with a checkmark next to it is loading and running. By unchecking an entry, clicking Apply - OK, then rebooting, it prevents that entry from loading and running.

If you want to research the startup list in that computer and decide which ones you want to uncheck and disable, go to this site and make use of the search function there. Type in an entry, then click Search. It'll tell you what the entry is and whether you can disable it or not.

I'll give you a head start. You can uncheck and disable

Adobe Reader Speed Launch (reader_sl.exe)

QuickTime Task (qttask.exe)

Thanks, people, for the great feedback. Cookiegal, below are the results of a new HiJackThis scan plus the results of the Ewido and Panda scans. Flavallee, I will check out my computer's start-up menu and what is running in the background and clear out what isn't needed. Inuyasha320, thanks.

if you still have any slow problems, this will make things a lot faster

1 go to start
2 click on run
3 type in msconfig and press enter
4 click on selective startup
5 uncheck "load startup items"
6 click on the tab that says Startup
7 check any items that say ipod, kodak or easy share, and if your on dialup, any item that has the name of your isp (no need if your on a router)

Inuyasha320:

The only time I have QuickTime Task recheck and re-enable itself is when I install an updated version of QuickTime, otherwise it remains unchecked and disabled.

Referee07:

Entries, such as TkBellExe and iTunesHelper will recheck and re-enable themselves every time you open and use RealPlayer and iTunesHelper. It's a bit of an annoyance, so you either have to go back and uncheck and disable them or you leave them checked and enabled.

oh,

it is just that about a year ago, i had quicktime player installed and i couldnt disable the qttask

when i disable it, then i go on a website that has streaming .mov files on it, the qt task re enables it's self

it got so annoying that i deteted the qttask but after i did that, to play streaming .mov files that are in websites, i had to open the player

so i just untalled the player

  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • It is a self extracting file.
  • Doubleclick the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your desktop.
  • Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.

Click Here and download Killbox and save it to your desktop but don’t run it yet.

Rescan with HijackThis, close all browser windows except HijackThis, put a check mark beside these entries and click fix checked.

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://Download.Windoesupdate.com

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.

Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Put a tick by Standard File Kill.
  • In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MYDLL.dll

  • Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
  • It will ask for confirmation to delete the file.
  • Click Yes.
  • Continue with that procedure until you have pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.
  • Killbox may tell you that one or more files do not exist.
  • If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.
  • Next in Killbox go to Tools > Delete Temp Files
  • In the window that pops up, put a check by ALL the options there except these three:
    • XP Prefetch
    • Recent
    • History
  • Now click the Delete Selected Temp Files button.
  • Exit the Killbox.

Reboot and do another Panda scan and post the results along with a new HijackThis log please.

One of the files that appeared in the Panda scan is connected with the Smitfraud infection and the Smitrem tool will remove that infection.

The entry in the trusted zone is spelled incorrectly and does not go to WindowsUpdates so is therefore useless.

You don't have to have WindowsUpdates in the trusted zone to download the updates.
