Hi,

I've previously posted this in the Malware section but I'm guessing it should have been here instead, please advise if I'm wrong. A donation will be made for a solution!

I hope someone can help, my girlfriends PC has become very slow to start up and appears to be getting worse over time. It has Bullguard Anti Virus and it updates on startup, basically it is so slow that until bullguard has updated you can't do anything at all and this takes as long as ten minutes at times. by comparison, my own PC also has bullguard and although its a little slow until it has updated, it only takes a couple of minutes.
This is a P4 2660 Mhz Dell with 1gig ram and using AOL Broadband. I ran a HJT log as soon as the PC would let me, whilst the bullguard update was still sunning and it is as follows:

I can also take a log once the PC is fully up and running if it would help?
My only ideas regarding the slowness is that there is AOL spyware and computer check-up software running at times along with the bullguard so perhaps its just too much. Also, is the couponreport.net item in the log safe?

If anyone needs anymore info please ask.

Thanks,

Gary

Gary:

That computer has too many programs loading during startup and running in the background. That in itself can slow down almost any computer.

Let's get the startup list trimmed down of the unnecessary ones.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark from:

igfxtray igfxtray.exe

igfxhkcmd hkcmd.exe

igfxpers igfxpers.exe

RemoteControl PDVDServ.exe
(Note: This entry is needed only if a remote control unit is being used with that computer to play DVD's.)

CamCheck CamCheck.exe

Adobe Reader Speed Launcher Reader_sl.exe

QuickTime Task QTTask.exe

RealTray RealPlay.exe

Kodak EasyShare Software EasyShare.exe

Microsoft Office OSA.EXE

After you're done, click Apply - OK, but don't restart yet!

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the Services window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on:

Google Updater Service

InstallDriver Table Manager

You have to do one at a time. When the small window appears, change the setting from "Automatic" to "Manual", then click Apply.

After you're done, close the Services window, then restart.

As the desktop loads, a small SCU window will appear. Ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it, then click OK.

Run a new scan with HijackThis, then post that new log here.

--------------------------------------------------------------

What peripherals(printer, scanner, camera, webcam, etc.) are being used or are connected to that computer?

--------------------------------------------------------------

It appears that version 1.6.0.02 of Sun Java Runtime Environment is installed. Version 1.6.0.07 is the current version.

Go here to download version 1.6.0.07.

Save the downloaded file, go into Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all old versions present, then go into C:\Program Files\Java and delete any leftover folders, then install version 1.6.0.07.

Go into MSCONFIG like you did above, then remove the checkmark from:

SunJavaUpdateSched jusched.exe

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response, I'm going to try your suggestions on it tomorrow night and I'll report back then. with regards to what items are connected to the computer, there is a multifunction printer, scanner & copier in one and a bluetooth adaptor permanently connected. There is also a backup hard drive, a digital photo frame and a digital camera but these are only connected when required.

Thanks again, I'll be posting again tomorrow night.

OK, good.

Take your time and make sure that you don't miss any of the startup entries that I've listed.

I'll be waiting to see the new log.

Hi,

I think all of the above went through okay, the only thing I couldn't see in the startup was RemoteControl PDVDServ.exe but perhaps I missed it! New log as follows:

Hi,

I managed to uncheck the other two but I cant see:
swg GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
or
MsgCenterExe RealOneMessageCenter.exe

is there anywhere else they will appear that I can remove them from the startup list?

The O4 startup list looks better now.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Let's get the buildup of temp and junk files cleaned out so we can eliminate that being part of the slowness problem.

Double-click MY COMPUTER, then click Tools - Folder Options - View(tab). Select "Show hidden files and folders", then click Apply - OK.

Go into these TEMP folders:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\(USERNAME)\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP

then delete everything from inside those TEMP folders.

There may be hundreds of files and folders inside one or both TEMP folders if they haven't been emptied out before or for a long time, so don't be alarmed by it. It's all junk, so get rid of it.

After you're done, empty the Recycle Bin and then restart your computer.

I see you are running Bullguard antivirus and the Symantec Core LC service is running, which may be a problem.

You can disable Symantec Core LC using MSCONFIG like you did for startup items above, except Symantec Core LC will be under the "Services" tab in MSCONFIG.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the window so you can see the list of services more clearly.

Double-click on:

a-squared Free Service

Google Updater Service

InstallDriver Table Manager

Symantec Core LC

Change the setting from "Automatic" to "Manual", then click Apply. You have to do one at a time.

After you're done, close the window and restart.

Cheers for the advice so far guys, I'm certainly noticing a difference in speed already!

I did the above on the services list, the Google Updater Service and InstallDriver Table Manager were already set to manual when I went in but I selected manual again and applied the changes individually. Here's the latest log, thanks for your patience with me on this:

I checked the entire O16 list at www.castlecops.com. The "CLSID/BHO List/Toolbar" master list didn't show any of them as being a problem. (y)

I'm glad to see that you're noticing an increase in speed and performance. :D

HI Flavalee,

Thanks for all your help in this, it does certainly seem to be noticably quicker than it was and the programs start up much quicker! It had really got so bad that you had to leave it for ten to fifteen minutes after logging on before it was even worth trying to do anything on it! I'll make a donation to you guys just now, your help has been much appreciated.

Thanks again,

Gary
