My wife has several friends that use AIM and she has been begging me to install it for her so she can talk to them. After installing AIM the next day I noticed the following. At startup a program is launched called "Desktop Search" which puts a small search window just above my system tray. This program does not work and will not respond when trying to close the program from the Task Manager. The program is not listed in "ADD/REMOVE Software" in the control panel. I have run both ADAWARE-SE and SPYBOT S&D, and have not had any results. The only reference to this program that I can find is in the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
There are 2 entries; Desktop Search, and FFIS. Both are type REG_SZ and the Values are C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\DesktopSearch.exe and
    C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
I have looked and no such files or folders exist on the computer, and I cannot delete either of these registry keys, when I try, another spawns immediately. I have uninstalled AIM as well and this did not help. So far the system performance is not being adversly affected, but I have a pet peeve about unwanted programs that continue to automatically load and won't die!

My system is running the following:
    HP Pavilion zv5000 Notebook 1.3GHz 512M Ram
Windows XP Home edition W/ Service Pack 2

Does anybody have any experiance with this type of ghost program? Are there any good utilities recommended for managing registry problems?
Thank You in advance for your time.

You have been hijacked - ffisearch.exe is a iSearch "Desktop Search" hijacker

I would run all the typical cleaners and then post a log if your still having problems from that point. You can download Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and update their definitions and then run them both and clean anythign they find. If they prompt to rescan upon reboot say yes and let it rescan. Once thats done Run HijackThis and then post up a log here.

Some of the others will surely be able to help you remove anything else that may be taking over.

Here are the links that Stumped mentioned, and righly so!

    SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
    AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
    SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
    definition updates
and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
    they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Do these and reboot before the next step.

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, put
it in a permanent folder (C:\HJT) , run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the
    log here.

Ok, I downloaded SpyBlaster and ran it, performed a full system scan with AdAware-SE, and Scanned, Fixed, and Immunized in Spybot S&D. Then I performed a full anti-virus scan with Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate edition version 8.1.0.825 with the 1/27/2005 Rev. 23 Virus definition file. After rebooting, I ran Hijackthis. Here is the Log file from the scan.

The desktop search program is still running at startup and I still can't delete it. I'm stumped at the moment... Does anybody recognize the Hijacked internet access by New.Net?

    Print this out

    Get and run new.net http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

    Trusted zones

    download http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right click the DelDomains.inf file and click Install, making sure Internet Explorer is closed. You won't see anything happen. Give it a minute

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Boot to safe mode and fix using HJT:

The ghost program that started this thread seems to have been taken care of by this latest sequence. I am still concerned about the items that I highlighted. They refer to Isearch which you mentioned earlier as being part of the problem. Should I be concerned?
Thank you for the help I really appreciate it!
