I made it about 10 minutes into the XP setup when I got the error screen

The file serial.sys is corrupted.
Press any key to continue

... and at the bottom it says

Setup failed. press any key to restart your computer.

Any ideas for a cause.

This can be caused by either a faulty disc or a faulty drive. You can also check the ATA or SATA cables that connect your drive with the motherboard or try replacing them.

Well the Vista CD works fine so I do not think it could be the drive. there are a good amount of scratches on the XP disc, but evern when I installed the disc off microsofts website it still didn't work after I burned it to a new CD-R.... Would i be able to put it on a DVD-R... would that ,make a difference. any ideas?
