I recently had to re-install Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe ImageReady CS, and since I did that, the icons shown for .JPEG files changed. Anyway, when I would double-click on them to open them, they would open in Paint, rather than Windows Picture And Fax Viewer.

When I went into the "Tools > Folder Options > File Types" dialogue box to change the .JPEG options back so that they would be opened in Windows Picture And Fax Viewer, it said that that is what they were being opened with already.

Also, if I right-click on a .JPEG file and chose "Open With", and then select Windows Picture And Fax Viewer, nothing happens.

Anyway, in the meantime, I've had to change it so that .JPEG's open with Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

So, something has happened with Windows Picture And Fax Viewer. How can I get it back, and how can I return the file properties so that .JPEG's and other file formats will open with that?

Thanks for the link, but unfortunately it was no help.

It seems that I have lost Windows Picture And Fax Viewer from the computer! When I was reading through that article you posted, it gave a direct location on the PC for Windows Picture And Fax Viewer, and, unfortunately, I'm getting errors when it's referred to.

Does anyone know how I can restore Windows Picture And Fax Viewer?

Are you saying that C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll does not exist, or that you get an error when you try to open a picture file in the "viewer"?

If it is not there, look for it in:

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

or

C:\I386

and copy it to the system32 folder.

You may also need shimeng.dll to go with it, if it is not present.

May be you can try this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8e-b10d-4ce4-a141-5866fd4a3286&DisplayLang=en

The file, "C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll", appears to be there.

The address that that article gave me, which was, "C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1", is not able to be entered in the fields that the article tells me to.

So, when I try to change the program that opens .JPEG images to the Windows Picture And Fax Viewer using the address to the program above, it will not lot me. It gives me this error, "The specified program could not be found. Make sure the file name and path are correct."

The elements of the command line after the dll are "switches" not actually a part of the name.

When you right click on a Jpeg file there is an "open with" option. Is not Windows Picture and Fax Viewer there, and nothing happens when you select it?

Also if you select "properties" there is an option to permanently change the association. That should be all that is necessary. As for the icon issue, I'm not sure that is a big deal as long as the program is working.

Try this, go to Start > Run and enter:

regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

Do you get a response "the dll successfully registered".

Try the viewer again.

Yes, Windows Picture And Fax Viewer is there, but when I click on it, nothing happens. The egg-timer comes up for about half a second, it goes away, and then nothing.

As for the "Properties" option, if I change that to open with Windows Picture And Fax Viewer, the .JPEG icon changes to the one with the cogs and it only opens with Paint.

Thanks for that. It's pretty close to the way it was, but it's a bit slower. I'll keep it if I can't get this problem sorted out.
