My Dell Dimension 4500S kept opening an empty Microsoft file folder on start up so I made changes to the registry using regdit following the instruction to solve the problem. Now the computer boots fine but won't go past the logon screen. I have tried to boot from the CD and the same thing happens. Tried starting in safe mode and the same thing happens.

I don't have the password for the Administrator so the CD won't allow changes?

AM I seriously screwed?

What was the registry change that you made?

Have you tried booting to Last Known Good Configuration?

When things get changed in the registry sometimes it gets damaged enough to the point that a complete reinstall might be the only option left to put things right again.

Thanks I was able with several references to get the computer to bot and operate properly and then I disabled the passwords for users and now the computer won't boot past the Windows start up screen.

You haven't answered my first question and now I'd like to know what you did that made it possible to boot normally before you disabled passwords and encountered a similar problem again.

So then you've reformatted and no longer need assistance?

Now after having the computer run properly for hours, as I said I changed the need for passwords for users and it won't boot past the Windows starting screen.

Why did you set a password in the BIOS?

Are you being prompted for a password on boot up?

Yes it ket asking for a password. I was able to disable it and the machine booted. I was able to reinstall everything else but when I disabled the user's passwords so others can use the machine without a password the machine rebooted but then wouldn't boot past the windows start up screen after the first two start up windows.

I just decided to start over and reinstall Windows XP. After taking a lot of notes the first time this time I have it right. Thanks for the help.
