WinPcap 4.1.1 has suddenly appeared in my 'Add/Remove' folder and although I have done a search for it and what it does, I am none the wiser! Apparently it has something to do with capturing 'Packets' across a network and I don't understand what they are talking about! I don't have a network and am wondering why this program has appeared. Is it something to do with Windows Live Essentials or is it Spyware? If not the latter, then do I need it and is it OK to remove it?

If it got on the add/remove list, it still could have been a legitimate part of something else.
I install Wireshark on some of my systems, and WinPcap comes along with that.

You might get a good idea of what it came along with if you open the 'C:\Program Files' folder, Click on 'view', then 'details'. Now click on the 'Date Modified' header (or just click on 'View', 'Arrange Icons By', 'Modified). Now scroll down until you see the WinPcap folder, and see if a folder just above it or below it have the same modification date.

Do you see anything with the same modification date/time?

The only file with the same modification date and time is Common Files. Inside that, right at the bottom and on it's own, is an entry: WinPcapNmap.exe. It was the only entry in Common Files with the same date and time. Any ideas? Could it have been part of a Windows Update do you think?

No, WinPcap is not affiliated with Microsoft. It is a driver which binds to your network adapter -- allowing applications like Wireshark to capture everything your network adapter sees.

How it got there is a mystery to me. I would uninstall it. If anything, some other program you have might complain about it missing. If this occurs, it is easy to find and reinstall.

Are you the only user of this PC? If not, ask other users why it might be on there. If you ARE the only user, I would look into checking the PC for a possible malware/virus.

While I do very well at malware location/cleanup in the real world, I am not trained to assist on forums such as this.

It is a well-known and very good network packet-capture driver. It is installed often along with other programs that monitor your connection or its contents. I would keep it as it is. It is small and won't hurt anything, but the program that installed it will stop working if you remove it. It may even go with a sidebar gadget.

I have noticed a sidebar with Google. Every time I use it, I get a sidebar that I never got before, with where I am located and with all the Google options.

If you haven't installed any network monitoring software before, I would be highly suspicious of winpcap's origins. Someone installing that can capture your network traffic, like login passwords, email etc.

A lot of programs use WinPcap. It may have been installed along with a program without you knowing it.

    http://www.winpcap.org/misc/links.htm

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and click on Open The Misc Tools section.

    Click on Open Uninstall Manager...

    Click on Save list...

Save the text file to the desktop.

Copy and paste the log (from Notepad) in your next post.

I am the only user of my PC. I have scanned with Microsoft Security Essentials and also Malware Bytes. Last week a couple of medium threats were found, but those were from something to do with Windows Media Player. I tried to play a .wma file and it wanted to download a piece of exta software so WMP could play it. The PC crashed when I tried to install this software and afterwards, I got a warning about spyware. These have now been cleaned out; I have also cleaned the Registry and done further scans, which found nothing.

Cleaning the registry has damaged your computer. You should restore the removed entries and uninstall any such cleaner.

How was the malware removed? "A warning about malware" is often malware itself. What kind of "warning"?

What is "Internet Research Centre v1"?

If you have used Limewire, you are almost certainly infected.

    (1) I use Reg Seeker or CCleaner to clean the Registry and have done for more than five years, without any ill effects.

    (2) The 2 pieces of ('Moderate' Threat) malware was found by Microsoft Security Essentials and then removed by it. Afterwards I ran Malware Bytes to make sure and it found nothing. Yesterday, I did a complete scan with MSE and again nothing was found.

    (3) I think Internet Research Centre v1 is to do with Genealogy software called 'Family Tree Legends'. It was installed at the same time and I think is part of the one year free research that came with the program.

Following on.....I've been having a look at some of my programs. I recently installed 'Free OCR' - a scanning program that enables you to extract text from scanned images. It may not be a coincidence that this program shows in Add/Remove as having been used on the same date as this program, although it's a mystery that WinPcap seems to have been installed before the OCR program! However, I do have another OCR program that was installed with my Canoscan scanner (although it doesn't work as well as the Free one) Do you think perhaps that WinPcap is needed with scanning software like this?

Perhaps I should uninstall WinPcap after a restore point and then see if my Free OCR prog still works then? I can always restore back if not.
