I've got a regular desktop pc and a laptop. Both are running Windows 7.

If both machines are wired, file and printer sharing works like expected. If the laptop is on the wireless, things go sour...

The machines don't see each other, I can't ping the laptop from the desktop or vice versa. Strangely enough, if I ping the desktop from the laptop by IP address the desktop will reply. At that point the desktop will see the laptop too and sharing (file, printer & media) works fine. But if the connection is idle for a couple of minutes they won't see each other anymore.

I've tried all kinds of things: disabled IPv6 on both, reconfigured file and printer sharing, disabled the firewalls on both. But none of these changes have had any effect whatsoever. I have also tried to give everything the same name (SSID, workgroup and network name on the desktop) but that had no effect either.

More info:
- Wired and wireless clients are on the same subnet.
- The router is a Linksys WRT-350N
- AP isolation is disabled
- uPnP is enabled on the router

Does anyone have any clue how to fix this?

Let's see this for each computer when you have the laptop running wirelessly.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

They sure look like they should see each other.

Can you ping by IP address either way?

Nope. Ping by IP only works from wireless to wired. If I ping the laptop by IP, I still get "Destination host unreachable" until the laptop pings the desktop.

After you ping the desktop, does that change pinging the laptop from the desktop? Have you disabled ALL firewalls on the laptop?

I believe I've solved the problem!

Apparently, the wireless MAC filter of the router also applies to wired devices attempting to connect to wireless devices. I've added the desktop's MAC address to the whitelist and now they see each other.

It would've been helpful if this behaviour was documented on the help page of the wireless MAC filter. I thought it was only a filter for wireless devices who wanted to connect, but it's a filter for any device that wants any access to the wireless side.

The reason why it started to work after pinging from wireless to wired is probably some temporary whitelist I think. Something along the lines of "wireless device A accessed device B so device B is also allowed to access device A". That probably lasted until the connection state went to closed again... at least that's what I think.

Thanks for your efforts though!
