I need help with connecting my laptop to the WLAN at my folks place. I'm completely baffled. My laptop (Dell Inspiron 1720, running Windows Vista Home) can connect to my network at home with no difficulty. It can also connect to the internet here if it's plugged directly into the modem. But if I try to connect via Wireless (Dell 1390 WLAN mini-card), it will connect to the network proper but with limited access. Specifically, it won't allow access to the internet. The kicker is that my folks have a laptop of their own that works just fine wirelessly.

I've looked around here a bit, and I've seen threads complaining of the same problem, and have tried to follow some of the advice in them. It looks like I'm having a DHCP problem, but I'm not really sure how to fix it.

Here are IPCONFIG /ALLs for my Inspiron that doesn't work, and my folks' Vostro that does.

If the network is secured disable connection on the the router and try to connect that way. If successful you should be able to re-enable encryption and reconnect. If possible use WPA-PSK. If you have to use WEP use a HEX key, not an ascii passcode.

Can you walk me through that process step by step? Also, how can I convert my WEP to hex? The concern is that it isn't my network, so I don't want to make any permanent changes to it, since everyone else can use it fine.

Ask the router owner or administrator to work with you. Login to the router and disable encryption (that setting is usually associated with the "wireless" section). For more detailed instructions see the user guide (on CD or online).

HEX keys are 10 or 26 hexadecimal digits for 64-bit or 128-bit WEP, respectively.
