can you close the laptop (then it goes on standby), but still play music running, or keep the video running (through another monitor)?

Some laptops have a facility that allows the CD and audio sections to function "stand alone", some dont. That process required no input from the CPU (assuming standard audio CDs are used)

But to operate the video section, the CPU needs to run and in Standby it's not running.

darn, so there's no way of making the laptop shut, but still play?! well w/o the special features... is there anyway to do it? such as w/ the help of programs? such as when you burn a cd, and close it, the cd burner will stop the computer from going on standby

You can stop the laptop from entering Standby when the lid is shut if that all you want to do.

Mine is set this way, the screen turns off but thats all.

Look in Power settings in Control Panel, just select what you actually want to happen when the lid is closed.
