Hi there,
New to this forum and in need of help. WORD 2000 keeps hanging my pc when it is opened. Only gets to the word 2000 small startup window and not into the complete screen. My ram is on the floor according to sys monitor but has been for some time without this problem occurring. Have removed all recent software additions but no joy. Running Windows 98 SE, 64MB ram. Other applications seem ok, but did hang when IE and Outlook were opened together. Think it might be a memory prob but not sure. Any help very welcome.
Thanks

Go to http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/ or http://lurkhere.com/~nicefiles and download HiJackThis. Use Winzip to unzip it, then install and run it.

NOTE: HiJackThis.exe file SHOULD be installed in it's own folder. Before downloading create a folder and name it HiJackThis then d/l HiJackThis to that folder. To run double-click the HiJackThis.exe file.

The reason for it's own folder is because HiJackThis will create not only log files, but a backup of whatever it removes so you can restore if necessary. If you d/l HiJackThis to your desktop and run it from there you will have log and backup files scattered all over your desktop.

To run, click the "Scan" button. When it's done the "Scan" button changes to "Save Log". Save the log file it creates (it should open in Notepad at that point). Copy and paste the results in your next post. Most of what it finds is harmless, so do not do anything yet. Someone will be glad to help you sort out any of the not so good items that may be in there.

IF you get an error saying msvbvm60.dll is missing,
Download and run the MS visual basic 6.0 runtime files

I'm no HiJack Guru, but I don't see anything wrong there.

Do a search on your system for normal.dot, and when you find it, rename it to normal.old

open Word now, and see what happens.

findthewebsiteyouneed.com is part of the Cool Web Search parasite gang.

Download CWShredder at
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html (merijn's site has been under a denial of service lately so try the second link)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

Run CWShredder, check you have the current version by clicking check for update and let it update
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do its thing.

When it is done REBOOT and then run and post a fresh HJT scan log.

Thanks

Sorted. That did the trick Randy G any suggestions on why this happened. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled Word a million times but it still hung. All I had to do was rename a template. Thanks man!

Nitehawk I guess its still a good idea to get rid of this parasite stuff too. Will do as you said and post HJT log back

like I said, I'm not a HijackThis guru!

normal.dot is the leading cause of hangups in Word. It can be because of badly written macros, or add-ins, or just cause Bill likes messing with people!!;):D

The reason I suggested renaming normal.dot, instead of deleting it, is in case you had cutomisations or macros in it that you wanted to keep.

If not, then it's safe to delete.

With only 64 megs of ram and all of that running, I'm surprised Word will open at all

I'd scale those back if I were you, start, run, msconfig, startup tab.
