I've added probably a hundred or so words to my custom dictionary (studying for some certifications, and got sick of capitalizing everything). Two questions:

    1. If normal.dot gets corrupted, and I have to delete, am I correct in assuming that all of my custom dictionaries and toolbars are toast?

    2. If so, is there a way to back up normal.dot? I've copied the working version to a backup folder outside of word; would I be able to just drop that in and go? I would assume so. But I want to get everyone else's opinion/knowledge.

Hey valis, you're right about both. If you have a critical normal.dot file, you'll be better off saving a copy of the file (with a safe extension, like .OLD or .SAV) in a secure location, such as a directory that is included in regular system backups. To restore over a corrupted normal.dot, simply delete the corrupted version and copy the backup version into its place (correcting the extension, of course).

You should be good at that point (y)

    [bump]

Wanted to add that the dictionaries themselves won't be corrupted, I don't think, if your normal.dot file goes south. However, the pointers to the dictionary libraries probably will.

Anyway, I might be wrong about that. Even so, restoring the backup copy will almost certainly bring you back up.
