So, my boss went surfing online on my computer at work and ended up with only God knows how many viruses/spyware/adware, etc., etc. I managed to get rid of some of them, but then the floodgates of Hell opened (otherwise known as about 30 instances of IE) with all kinds of pop-ups. I downloaded HijackThis and have a log file here. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

hi, welcome to TSG.

download ccleaner

http://www.ccleaner.com/

* Install CCleaner
* Launch CCleaner and look in the upper right corner and click on the "Options" button.
* Click "Advanced" and remove the check by "Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hours".
* Click OK
* Do not run CCleaner yet. You will run it later in safe mode.

Also download the EliteBar (searchmiracle) Removal Tool (must be run in safe
mode)

http://www.simplytech.it/ETRemover/
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Intern...r-Remover.shtml

* Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here

http://www.ewido.net/en/

* Install ewido.
* During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
* Launch ewido
* It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
* On the left side of the main screen click update
* Click on Start and let it update.
* DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know
how.

How to boot to safe mode

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You
will need them to refer to in safe mode.

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in
safe mode:

* Once in Safe Mode, double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will
disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly ---
this is normal.

* Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

Now run ccleaner.

after doing all that, run the l2me scan .

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

for 9x

http://www.subratam.org/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=41

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Read and
Accept the agreement. Click the Install button to extract the files
and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your
desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log
by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and
it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad
will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into
this thread.

post another hijack this log and the ewido log and the l2me

You may have windows messenger on. No I'm not talking about msn messenger when you type in instant messages. I'm talking about a different messenger. But this may solve your problem becuase those visues could have turned it on. They propertly attacked, you came along and wiped them out, and now your getting pop ups.

So I notice in your Hijackthis reprot that you have windows XP sp1. I don't know which version of XP you have so I perovided information to both.

Windows XP Home

1. Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
2. Click Performance and Maintenance
3. Click Administrative Tools
4. Double click Services Scroll
5. down and highlight "Messenger"
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
7. Click the STOP button.
8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9. Click OK

Windows XP Professional

1. Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
2. Click Administrative Tools
3. Click Services
4. Double click Services Scroll
5. down and highlight "Messenger"
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
7. Click the STOP button.
8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9. Click OK

That should keep the pop ups from appearing. Now just remember to keep your fire wall, anti-spyware, anti-adaware, and visus programs updated regualry.

big k :)

Thanks a ton, you guys. My boss called a tech support guy who came out here and pretty much eliminated the problems. I think he actually did exactly what khazars posted in his reply. I appreciate it. I also downloaded the trial version of Adware Away, and when I run its scan, it claims that the Notify Dll Hijacker is still present in the system. However, scans of Stinger and XoftSpy claim that the system is entirely clean. I haven't had any pop-up problems since the tech guy left, but the Adware Away scan result concerns me a little. Any suggestions, anyone?

I have never heard of adaware away so I would be wary of it and some of these unknown products which give false positives.

You can use the free adaware form Lavasoft and Spybot's search and destroy! Also, Micirosoft's antispyware ia an excellent programme and all are free!

All tools can be downloaded at the link below and found on that page!

. Microsoft® Windows AntiSpyware
. SpyBot search and destroy
. AdAware SE

I downloaded, installed, and ran all three of the aforementioned programs. The Microsoft one and Ad-Aware worked wonders for the computer. They each detected several files and deleted/quarantined them. Spybot, however, will begin scanning and then just hangs while displaying "Running bot-check (637/25548: Central24)" in the lower left hand corner. If I check task manager, the program is still responding, but it doesn't seem to be making any progress. Also, some pop-ups are occurring again, and occasionally my current open browser window (Firefox) will redirect me to random sites (usually msn search or something like that). Great progress so far in resolving this issue. It just feels like there's a few bugs left.

Have you even tryed my idea and see if that solved your pop up window problem?

BigK, I did indeed try what you said. I think the IE pop-ups may have stopped, but then again they may have just decreased in frequency. The Firefox forwarding problem persists, though. I have all the logs here:

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and
select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then
press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and
icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will
continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will
open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into
this thread, along with a new hijack this log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are
asked to do so!

Qoologic

download FindQoologic-Narrator.zip save it to your Desktop.

http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=134981

Extract (unzip) the files inside into their own folder called FindQoologic.
Open the FindQoologic folder.
Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat file to run it.
Wait until a text opens, post it in a reply to your thread.

you might find you get an error message when first running this file, if so
close it & run again and wait until file.txt opens on desktop.

Ignore the first list that opens with a long list of files and wait for FILE.
TXT to pop up

It normally takes somewhere between 10 to 15 minutes depending on your
computer so don't panic if it takes some time.

post anotheer hijack this log, the l2me log and the qoologic log!

This infection is a nasty one, and can take a few sweeps to delete it! Hopefully there are no other hidden files but we'll have to make sure!

I want you to run both online Panda and Kaspersky scans as they will tell us if there are any hidden dlls for this infection, we have got rid of most of it, just this to go!

Download the pocket killbox

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

have hiajck this fix these entries, click FIX and close all browsers and progs!

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Recguard] C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmmdo.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmmdo.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{07A8DF85-7D70-4814-B7A7-7A4CCA36EDF8}: NameServer = 69.50.184.86,85.255.112.9
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{51E9DFC6-7AD8-440E-A090-07B53DB912AD}: NameServer = 69.50.184.86,85.255.112.9

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{07A8DF85-7D70-4814-B7A7-7A4CCA36EDF8}: NameServer = 69.50.184.86,85.255.112.9

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill.
In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste each of the following
lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the
X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confirmation to
delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have
copied and pasted all of these in the Paste Full Path of File to Delete box.

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not
exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you
don't miss any.

Hopefully this file isn't there, but it could well be! cisvvc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmmdo.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\NTFSNLPA.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\RDSNDIN.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cisvvc.exe

Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it.
Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you
can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Run an online antivirus check from

http://www.kaspersky.com/beta?product=161744315

you will need to input a name
and email adress but anyone will do & then acccept an active X control IT IS
SAFE to do so LET IT FIX WHATEVER IT FINDS

post another hijack this log, the active scan from panda and the report from kaspersky. Kaspersky's will be a long log, so just post the part where it finds stuff!

So, the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmmdo.exe was no longer present on my computer, but it was replaced by the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmaog.exe
Pocket Killbox was unable to delete the file (I believe because it is currently in use). Kaspersky's was the last thing I ran, and it stated that it found no infections on the system. Here's the HijackThis log and the Active Scan log. Active Scan claimed that it eliminated every infection it discovered.
