Both my friend and I are using excel on windows XP.
He has sent me a disk of data which I can't transfer to my computer.
On inserting the CD I get "Finacial Situation 20 jan 2007.xls:file format not valid".
Why won't it work please?

Can you copy the file to your HD? Try drag and drop.

What kind of disk? If it is a CD-R, and especially if it is a CD-RW, then the disk itself may be damaged. It may be unreadable in your drive, even if it works fine in another drive. If you have another drive or computer, see if the file can be moved from the disk that way.

Have got file onto HD but still won't open.File format not valid.
Could the fact that the "File System is UDF " have anything to do with it?
No. The file system is only the method of storage. Moving files from one file system to another is like moving a file from a drawer to a desk---the file is the same no matter how it is stored.

Either the file was created from a different version of the software or it is corrupt.

I have never right clicked anything until my friend suggested it.
Having inserted CD, I right clicked on the excel file
I guessed that microsoft works might open it and it did.
Import Excel Spreadsheet came up with 5 worksheets which I imported one at a time onto my HD.
There is probably a quicker way but I got what I was after.
Hope it helps someone in the future.
