I hope someone can shed some light on this one for me!

I've been helping out a friend whose PC was badly infected with viruses and trojans - they were connected to the 'net with no firewall or anti-virus running :(

I've cleaned up most of the problems (I think) by loading, updating and running: AVG, Ad-Aware, FxIstBar and CWShredder.

The only irritant now is that when any user logs on, Notepad opens a blank document, and the user needs to exit this window.

The PC is running XP Home, SP1.

I've installed and run HiJackTis 1.99.0 and the log is:

Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)

Running processes:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
C:\Program Files\HiJack This\HijackThis.exe

Go to Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.
Look for any of the following (or similarly named) and uninstall them:
Windows ControlAd | Windows ServeAd | Admanager Controller

Close all windows
Fix the following entries with HJT:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nvsv32.exe] nvsv32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows ServeAd] C:\Program Files\Windows ServeAd\WinServAd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows ControlAd] C:\Program Files\Windows ControlAd\WinCtlAd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Admanager Controller] C:\Program Files\Admanager Controller\AdManCtl.exe
O23 - Service: ZESOFT - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe (file missing)

Boot into Safe Mode
Delete the following files/folders:

c:\windows\system32\nvsv32.exe
C:\Program Files\Windows ServeAd (delete folder)
C:\Program Files\Windows ControlAd (delete folder)
C:\Program Files\Admanager Controller (delete folder)

Reboot into normal mode
Update and run AdawareSE scan
Install Spybot Search & Destroy and run scan (see forum stickys for info/links)

Go to windowsupdate (Start > All Programs > Windows Update) and install all Critical Updates
(sp2 recommended but not necessary, but all critical updates are!)

Post a new HJT log when done.
