I turned firewalls off on both.
I've downloaded the LLTD update for the XP PC
    I've enabled NetBIOS on each

So you're telling me that I have to create a user account for every person that I want to be able to access my public folder? That seems ridiculous, I have 5 computers in my house and I'm the only user of the Vista....I'm not going to create a user account for someone that will never sit at my computer desk. You left out instructions on the "everyone" thing that you don't recommend.

This has been done already. Anything else?

Only the Private folders. But you should check both permission levels on each share and file/folder.

Everyone means EVERYONE which inlcudes any milicous hacker that gets into your network.

I know that with the instructions I provided I could very easily share folders, files, and drives betwen an XP Pro and Vista basic machine.
