So, I recently installed windows 7 on my main home computer, which was running windows xp, licensed and verified. However, now that I am no longer running WinXP on a computer, I intend to install it on my spare, with the same license key. Will this work, or will the key not work because it was already technically used on my main computer?

It should work, because when I did a major upgrade on my main I had to reinstall XP, and had no problems there. But I just want to make sure before I wipe my hard drive.

Is the copy of XP an OEM or a retail version?

Retail I'm pretty sure. We didn't buy ours from dell or anything.

In that case, it is fine to install it on a new computer, so long as the previous computer does not have the XP on it anymore. You may have to actually call Microsoft and talk to a live person, however, to get the key accepted since they'll have to have it verified that it is no longer on the other computer.

You can only re-use that copy of Windows XP if you used a full Windows 7 license and not an upgrade.
