There really isn't a pattern to the locking up. Sometimes it is when my daughter is logging out of her account. Sometimes it is when I run an application and the applications can vary. It is XP SP1 on a homemade PC. This is a new issue and Spysweeper doesn't detect anything. Here is a HijackThis just in case. Let me know what else I can provide.

    Thanks,
    David

Hi David, is there any reason why you have not updated to SP2?

Solving your problem may be as simple as doing the upgrade. SP2 has been out there for some considerable time now and is a very stable build.

In fact SP2 is rather a misnomer - only Microsoft could have called this a Service Pack, any other software manufacturer would have called it a complete new release (and probably charged for it). SP2 brings a raft of improvements to XP. Microsoft always "sold" SP2 on its improved security features, but in my own experience it really is the stability that SP2 has brought to XP that is its main "selling" point.

Even I am using XP Pro SP1 and I am facing the same issue for quite sometime now. I suppose upgrading to SP2 might resolve the issue. I am going to upgrade on this weekend, would get back here after the upgrade and would let you know the results.

Probably no need to remind you...... but ... ALWAYS backup your data before you make major changes (and SP2 is a very major change). As an added precaution copy your data backup to a CD or burn an ISO to a DVD.

Also advisable to make a full backup of the Registry and your Programs folder.

    Good luck... (y)

Sorry...I've been out of town. I don't want to upgrade to SP2 for several reasons, but the point is that I have been on SP1 for a long time and never had this issue before.

Sorry davidpat, but if you cannot upgrade to SP2 then it makes it very difficult to offer assistance.

XP SP1 was an inherently unstable environment. SP2 is not just a service pack it is for all practical purposes a new OS. It is much more stable and, in my view, much easier to diagnose.
