Try tapping F8 on start up and choosing safemode

Do you have any disc that came with the laptop?

Something I like to try is use an Ubuntu live cd to see if the computer will boot to it. If it does, then the hard drive is at fault, or you know that it will boot to the cd drive and you can examine the hard drive from Ubuntu.

A neat thing 9.10 has is a hard drive reporting tool, it will tell you if SMART is tripped or if there are bad sectors on the disk. Also, the computer has to be set to boot from the cd-rom in BIOS for it to work.

    It's worth a shot.
