Hello.

I have a Gateway laptop, model MX-3417, Turion dual core, XP media centre with a HL- DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4080N

The DVD drive does not show in my computer. Under Properties/General it states that windows cannot load device driver... Corrupted or missing (code 39)

Trouble shooting does nothing. Under driver properties. Driver is MS V5.1.2535.0 attempted to update driver from recovery CD but none found. Also in device manager under other devices Coprocessor and SM bus controller are listed as drivers not installed (code 28) Drivers were also not found on recovery CD.

Unistalling disk drive and reinstalling it does not work.

Can you please help me get windows to recognize the drive? Thanks

Sounds like the drive may be dead, unfortunately. :(

To verify that, reboot and go into BIOS (I'm not familiar with Gateway products, but the the initial boot/POST screen should tell you which button to press to get into Setup; usually it's either Del or one of the Function keys) and check to see if the drive is being recognized there. If it's not, then the drive is definitely dead.

The drive shows up in the BIOS.

I tried putting in my recovery disk and it tries to run but won't and I cannot reboot with it in there at the time. Having the disk in froze the computer. I had trouble rebooting from there.

Just a thought.. If I am forced to get a new DVD drive is Gateway propitiatory?

I'm wondering - because it's a laptop - if it's come loose just enough to hang? Jazz

My laptop doesn't get moved around much.. infact I don't think I have moved it in about 3 months. But I will get my hubby to look at that option. Thanks.
