I am running Windows XP Home SP1 and recently, about a week ago I encountered a serious problem with my PC. When I boot up and Windows reaches to the 'Windows is starting up' screen it hangs. Occasionally, it will reach to show all the User Names but I cannot click on them or even to 'Shut down this computer'. The only way I am able to access my account is to press F8 and select 'Use last know good configuration'. Does anyone have any ideas? I tried System Restore when the problem first emerged but the problem recurred and now it is too late to restore that way back then. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for your prompt response blues_harp. I was reading about the clean boot you mentioned on the Microsoft site and I was wondering why I would need to run the Windows Installer as stated in step 2. Can you describe in a little more detail if a clean boot will delete any currently installed programs or documents? For now I am working on a very important presentation and cannot afford to shut down or reboot so will try this when I'm done. Thanks again for the help.

Hi..I would uncheck all boxes except...Load System Services..then you will not have to worry about Windows Installer..

Ok. I have not changed anything under msconfig but I will tell you what services have been reported as 'stopped' under 'Services' in msconfig.

1. Alerter
2. Application Management
3. ASP.NET State Service
4. Indexing Service
5. ClipBook
6. COM+ System Application
7. Logical Disk Manager
8. IMAPI CD-Rom Burning Service
9. Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
10. Distributed Transaction Coordinator
11. Windows Installer
12. Network DDE
13. Network DDE DSDM
14. Net Logon
and about 10 others including about 5 Remote Managers...

Under Essential, only one is reported as being off. This one is 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator.

Do you think RPC or Net Logon services being stopped could be causing the problem?

Thanks again for all the help. Much appreciated.

I think I may have spoken to soon. Now sometimes my ATI TV program crashes and I have to shut down or try to restart and it sticks when it says 'Windows is shutting down..."

Any suggestions?

Please some help. This problem has re-occurred and I do not want to have to do a fresh install. I am willing to try the 'Clean Boot' you requested but I want to know exactly what I should enable/disable so that it does not render my computer useless... Should I back up before I use the clean boot? What are the risks that I will lose my data?

Thank you for all the help. I'm sorry that I have to restart this diagnostic process.

Hi..Running a clean boot is to try and locate where a problem may exist..
Whatever is unchecked (disabled) in msconfig..can be rechecked (enabled)
BUT Leave Load System Services..enabled....
Otherwise you may have to reregister...
But for now you need your Hijack log to be given the all clear..
