Hi, I'm having a problem with my .exe files occasionally. Sometimes I download a .exe file and when I click it and try and install the program it starts, an "installing" message appears and then disappears and nothing happens. I'm not sure if it's being blocked by another program or my computer just hates me sometimes. It doesn't happen with all .exe files, but it's not just a problem with a single file either. If anyone has any suggestions they would be welcome. Also I have winzip, so its not just a .zip file, it actually is a .exe that won't run.

Thanks for replying, yes I'm using XP, and the first link didn't change my results when I tried opening the file again. So here is my HJT log.

Add remove programs – remove Viewpoint

Fix these with HJT – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

    DL http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

    C:\WINDOWS\dahcxkp.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

Now paste these folders in and make sure Deltree is checked before hitting the red x

    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

    START – RUN – type in %temp% OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete
Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp
    Empty the recycle bin
    Boot

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ (W2K/XP Only)
    · Install ewido.
    · During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    · Launch ewido
    · It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
    · On the left side of the main screen click update
    · Click on Start and let it update.
    · DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

    Run Ewido:
    · Click on scanner
    · Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    · During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    · When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
    · Save the report to your C: Drive
This will take some time to run!
    Boot to normal mode
Post that log and a new HiJack log – If the Ewido log is too large attach it.

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Ok, I did as you said. There was no Viewpoint manager in add/remove, I believe I've removed it before. Neither of the files was found when I used killbox. I used Hijackthis to fix both problems you said to fix, hopefully it worked right. I'm posting the HJT log and ewido log now. Thanks.

Well the program I want to run still won't run. I went to the link in your last post and did what it said to get rid of what was left of Norton. There is still one thing in HJT that says "norton" but I believe two other things that used to say "Norton" are gone, but I have a new log in case you wanted to look at it.

    ---EDIT---
Okay, so I rebooted in safe mode and tried running the .exe and it ran and installed the program. I wasn't sure if this was a good idea or not, but I was bored. So something was blocking the program from installing before, but I don't know what. Oh well.

Do I understand that this problem only occurs with installation files?

If so, see post 1 (for comparison) and post 8 in this thread for some possiblities:

    http://forums.techguy.org:80/showthread.php?t=371144

Additionally, if it is a Windows Installer issue (not just InstallShield), you can try updating to the latest version:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803/

by the way you can also fix this, though it's unrelated to your problem:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

edit didn't see your "edit" so if you feel the problem is resolved you can certainly ignore further troubleshooting.

If I have suggestions to try out, I never feel the problem is resolved :D I've tried everything in the other post you linked me to and that didn't seem to work, so I'm going to check out the second link you posted now. I'll also get right on fixing the R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing. Thanks, I'll let you know if the microsoft link helps at all. Unfortunately it looks like I may have to install half my programs in safe mode until I figure out if one of my programs is being a brat.

    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner - Online scan

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean, have it delete it.
Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from Kaspersky scan

If it is a conflict issue you can also troubleshoot it by using "clean boot" troubleshooting techniques.

Essentially you follow the MS directions to HIDE all Microsoft Services, then disable the startup group and the NON Microsoft services. If no problem in that mode, re-enable what you disabled by halves (or work in reverse by disabling by halves) until you find the culprit.
