The principal of my small church school that I volunteer at made an attempt to install his home cable software on the school's laptop which somehow corrupted it getting the error message:Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
I managed to repair that from some of the threads here but a new problem has come to my attention. In making an attempt to defrag using the MS defrag program, I noticed that when I click on either the 'analyze' or defrag buttons it doesn't do anything. However, it doesn't end here. I made and attempt to update using the icon in the START menu and it also doesn't do anything. THEN I made and attempt to scan for viruses using the latest AVG software and it also didn't do anything when I clicked on the icon. These are probably not the only icons that don't work I'm guessing.
I'm stumped. What could this be and how shall I go about resolving this issue without reinstalling the OS?
Thanks so much and may God bless,
Peter

You don't say how you fixed the original problem - but I had the same error message and followed 5 pages of instructions to repair it, and even after all that different little problems kept occurring and in the end I had to reinstall Windows. So it might save a lot of aggravation to just reinstall now.

You could try a repair install from the CD, it should leave your files intact but it would be best to back them up to external storage first.
