After a number of days, yesterday I decided to install the following:

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB3186497)
Installation date: ‎6/‎22/‎2017 12:06 PM
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Recommended
The Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 is a highly compatible, in-place update for all the previous versions of .NET Framework 4.X. After you install this update, you may have to restart your computer.

My browser is now Brave and prior to that the browser was Firefox. When I used Firefox weekly something, and I believe it to be Microsoft for their updates, would change my default browser. To what I don't know it was changed to nor why. (I have asked about this before, the changing of my default browser, and stated I believed it to be Microsoft, recall being told (2016-10-08) it was not Microsoft.) It seems very coincidental it always happens around the time (weekly) Microsoft is doing the update (?) scan.

It happened this morning when I turned on my computer and booted in to Windows, my default browser, which is Brave, was no longer my default browser. That change was due to 'nothing' I had done. Prior to yesterday any link in my email I clicked on would open my default browser and I could conduct my business as usual but not today. When clicking on a link nothing happens. My default browser still remains 'something else' and not Brave.

I have absolutely no control over this situation and I want it to stop.

Would KB3186497 have anything to do with the situation? Can I uninstall it without harm to my computer system . . . or any other suggestions?

The 1000$ question is WHAT is now your default browser
Microsoft do not change the default browser without your permission on 7
Quite possible and indeed likely on Windows 10 after updates when it would probably set Edge
Numerous sites - downloads and updates do
For instance see my screenshot re flash player update
Untitled.png
unless you opt out it will make chrome your default browser
Such actions are quite common and is the price you pay for using Flash player or other Adobe free software
Many people argue that it should be an opt in rather than an opt out

I feel reasonably certain you do have control over it - it is often merely a case of not realising that such are offered as on Flash updates.
I cannot find if the BRAVE About or whatever it is called has the option there to set as default as does IE Chrome Firefox Safari Opera etc. If it does not you will have to use Control Panel Default Programs and set Brave as default to open all file types and protocols it can do.
IF it was not so set that may be the problem
HOWEVER as I said at the start - what is now your default browser

AND re your choice of browser BRAVE
https://www.technochops.com/brave-browser-review-2017-heres-experienced-far/2681/
IMHO a little too new to use on your main computer
I would view it more at this stage as testing if it suits and evaluating problems on one of second computers so to speak.

I have four Windows 7 computers in the house.
My browser has never been changed from my default, currently Palemoon.
I also have FF ESR as a backup.

If this has been happening to you since October 2016, you can't say that an update you just installed did the changing.

Note: I did not and do not intend to install .NET 4.7
As far as I'm concerned MS's NET is a mess. I find for what I do, my computers function with the version of .NET on them.

Three Win 7 computers have nothing above .NET 3.5, which comes with Win 7.
I have installed a SP to .NET 3.5 and I patch it every time a patch is issued but I haven't installed .NET 4 anything.

One computer came with .NET 4.5.
Since it is too hard to remove, I let it remain and just patched it. I have two SP installed and all patches.

So what updates were installed on October 8th? If that was the first time this happened, you need to examine those updates.
Since this was not Patch Tuesday, you should be able to figure out what was installed.

October 2016 marked the first month of the huge bundle with heaven knows what in it.
I don't accept that. Instead I have been manually installing the monthly Security only bundle which is a lot smaller in size.
Note Oct. 2016 for 64 bit computers
KB3185330 119.4MB
KB3192391 79.2MB

The October date was the first time I'd posted my problem here. The changing of the default browser was an ongoing situation before that but I don't now recall when it started.

It doesn't actually cause any problems but it's annoying. I would like to know though what might be the cause and since it happens around the time updates from Microsoft occur that's what makes me suspicious of Microsoft. IMO one never really knows who or what is looking at what resides on one's hard drive!

The changing of my default browser, Brave, which I started using a couple weeks ago, the change hadn't happened until yesterday after I had installed MS NET 4.7 (the latest version). What makes me believe it's Microsoft updates as the culpret is the timing of the updates.

Thank you for your response.

Macboatmaster, my browser is Brave, a web browser. It's my default browser, which I am capable of setting as my default browser and I did just that. My default browser, which is Brave, isn't the problem. The problem is whatever is causing my default browser to NOT be my default browser. "Something" is changing my default browser to not be my default browser and this happens midweek when Microsoft does whatever it does for updates.

This changing of my default browser has been an ongoing aggrevation for some time. It was happening when Firefox was (meaning not currently) my "default" browser. So you see it's NOT the browser, my default browser, Brave, changing itself from default. That's done by whatever is controlling it.

IMO, the changing of my browser (it doesn't matter which browser being talked about) has something to do with Microsoft and its updating process. One day it changes my default browser to something else and the next day my default browser has been changed back to being my default browser. I, myself, have done nothing at all to constitute the change.

I don't use Flash anywhere at any time and all updating has to have my permission when an update is available.

I didn't ask for help or input regards the browser, any browser. My quandry is WHAT is causing my browser, the one I have designated to be my default browser, to be changed from default and I do not have the option to change it back to default. Something else, whatever it is returns it to my default browser of choice, which is Brave, the only browser I use.

Actually, I shouldn't have to repeat myself. Maybe go back to my original post and reread it because it appears the last sentence may have been missed.

And just for the record, I have NO problems with the new Brave browser, not one problem!

Hi - hope all is well

I agree - indeed as I said

There has also been many reports of it failing to stay set as default browser - although these were mainly on 10
and one of the later versions of Brave incorporated the GUI on about brave to set as default

That it matters . . . I had used Firefox for many years and after Microsoft started with Windows 10 Firefox was plagued with the same issue of something (not me) changing Firefox to NOT be my default browser. At the time Windows' updates were due to arrive during a particular week Firefox, which was my default browser at that time, was plagued with the exact same issue. When I would first open the browser (Firefox at the time) there would be the message that Firefox was not my default browser. I knew I had not changed it to NOT be my default browser. I was not able to make it my default browser while whatever was going on was happening. I had to wait for "whatever" had changed it to change it back. So, you see it isn't just Brave, which is beta and I understand it's beta, that experienced the change. I guess you had to be there. ( :

I deleted my previous comments in this post after reading this article:

Microsoft recommends you ignore Microsoft-recommended update

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/06/26/dotnet_4_7_not_ready_for_skype_for_business_or_exchange/

Which addresses .NET Framework 4.7, which you installed.

This might be your issue.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

One question though . . . if I uninstall .NET Framework 4.7 what havoc will that create for me? If in fact it can be uninstalled.

You're welcome :)

I found Win7 frustrating after the concept of rollups for security updates was instituted. Too many issues the very first time.

For Internet usage, I jumped ship and started using a Linux distro, Puppy Linux, exclusively.
I boot from a DVD so every fresh boot is like an original installation.
I do still use Win7 offline.
Puppy may not be for everyone, but it works better, easier for me for online usage. :)
