I just installed XP on my brother's computer. He is trying to use winamp to listen to music, but gets an error message every time. It also detects new hardware every time the computer is restarted. It shows up as Audio Multimedia.

Here's the message:
DirectSound output v2.2.10 error
Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078

I've tried to download drivers, but I have no idea which one to get or where to get it. Any ideas?

BTW, it is a Dell Dimension 8100.

If its a Dell Dimension, then it should have its "Service Tag" somewhere around the case. You can usually download the drivers off of Dell's website in the support section. Its a lot easier if you had your "Service Tag" though, it will limit the search for you. But if you cant find it just go ahead and match your bro's computer to the options on the site. Go HERE!!!. Good Luck (y)

You'll have to determine if your 8100 has the Turtle Beach or Creative Labs sound card. Download and install this system information tool and see what it says about your sound (multimedia):
