Lately, when I'm opening an application, my sound "chatters" and my mouse "stutters" (hope that's not too technical). When the app opens, all goes back to normal. Any thoughts? I run XP on an Acer Aspire 1690 laptop.

Sounds like the CPU is under too much load. If this just started happening, consider whether you installed anything recently around the same time. Did you update a driver? If so, it could be causing conflicts or be bugged. Other than that, try closing some other applications, removing unneccessary start-up programs and running some basic maintenance software like defrag, anti-spyware (Windows Defender) and Anti-virus.

I tried all of that (in my non-tecchie way), to no avail.

Do Start > Run type TASKMGR press Enter, click the Processes tab.
Now cause the 'stutter' and watch to see which process uses extra CPU.
Let us know what you find.
