a week ago i was on youtube and in the middle of a video my sound stopped working on my acer laptop. i checked to see if it was the video and it wasnt because my sound will not work when i play my games, use skype or watch movies. i check to see if its muted, or if i uninstalled a driver by accident and none of those are it. i went to device manager and checked if there were any question marks under sounds, video and gaming and there is none. now i am not good with computer stuff so if anyone helps could you explain as simply as you can? thanks.

Topigorawr...could you please list the following about your laptop:

    1. Operating System/Service Packs
    2. Processor
    3. RAM
    4. Hard Drives/Used Space/Free Space
    5. Installed graphics or sound cards
    6. Is Flash Updated? You can go here for an update:

    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

    7. Have you installed or removed anything recently? Sometimes a program will install and make changes to a system and then when it's removed conflicts appear.
    8. Any other problems like slowing programs or the internet?

One thing you can try for now is the following (thanks Phantom010):
    Click Start > Run > type services.msc

    Locate the Windows Audio service.

Double-click it and make sure the service is Started and the Startup Type is set to Automatic.

    Topigrawr...

    1. Which version of Windows you are using
    2. Processor means your type of processor. You can find this information in Windows using the System Information program which is located on your start menu. On the Start Menu go "All Programs"->"Accessories->System Tools. In that menu you will find info on your processor.
    3. How much system RAM you have in your machine. You will find this information in the same menu as Processor. It is listed as "Total Physical Memory"
    4. Your main C: Drive. Open My Computer->right click on the C: drive, select properties and see how big the drive is and how much is free space.
    5. Bypass this one for now
    6. Good
    7. OK so you had a virus showing up and downloaded the removal tool. Then the problem
    8. No other problems to report

Where did you get the removal tool? Was it from Norton? Is it still on your machine?

Seems to me this virus may have done some damage to your system...

89.99 makes one wonder who is writing the viruses LOL...the PC manufacturers maybe? OK just kidding.

Your fix file should be fine since it's from Norton. I'm a little concerned that it didn't find anything...

Well you seem to me to be close to moving this to the Virus/Malware Forum. I will see if I can get the thread moved for you...

I've moved the thread to the Virus & Other Malware Removal forum.

Please download DDS by sUBs to your desktop from the following location:

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr

Double-click the dds.scr file to run the program.

It will automatically run in silent mode and then you will see the following note:

"Two logs shall be created n your Desktop".

The logs will be named dds.txt and attach.txt.

Wait until the logs appear and then copy and paste their contents in your post.

    Please download GMER from: http://gmer.net/index.php

Click on the "Download EXE" button and save the randomly named .exe file to your desktop.

Note: You must uninstall any CD Emulation programs that you have before running GMER as they can cause conflicts and give false results.

Double click the GMER .exe file on your desktop to run the tool and it will automatically do a quick scan.

If the tool warns of rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan, click on No and make sure the following are unchecked on the right-hand side:

    IAT/EAT
Any drive letter other than the primary system drive (which is generally C).

Click the Scan button and when the scan is finished, click Save and save the log in Notepad with the name ark.txt to your desktop.

Note: It's important that all other windows be closed and that you don't touch the mouse or do anything with the computer during the scan as it may cause it to freeze. You should disable your screen saver as if it comes on it may cause the program to freeze.

Open the ark.txt file and copy and paste the contents of the log here please.

If you'll post the requested logs we should be able to fix it.

ok when i click that first link to download the dds a window box pops up and says it has to close the page so cant download it. also my when i try to open the page my computer will say you are running critically low on free disk space. and it says 0mb. but this morning i uninstalled some games and google chrome to clear space and it said you have freed 200 mb on your computer. then i went to system restore and turned it off and my computer said you have successfully resolved the low disk problem. but now its back to saying i have really low space. i dunno whats going on

Please see if you can run this:

Please go here and download the TDSSKiller.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click to TDSSKiller.exe on your desktop to run it.
    • Click on Start Scan
    • As we don't want to fix anything yet, if any malicious objects are detected, do NOT select Cure but select Skip instead.
It will produce a log once it finishes in the root drive which should look like this example:

    C:\TDSSKiller.<version_date_time>log.txt

Please copy and paste the contents of that log in your next reply.

ok do you mean it will look like this?
    Virus.Win32.Rloader.a
    service: ACPI
and this one says malware object, high risk

    the second one says
    Rootkit.Boot.Pihar.c
    Physical drive: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0
    malware object, high risk

thats the only thing i see close to as the example you put because after i put skip, it goes back to the main window and says there are unprocessed malware objects. and it gives duration, processed, found, neutralized and quarantined then at the bottom it says start scan.
