    Hi,

I'm at my wits' end with this and would really appreciate some help.

Essentially I get perfect sound but no picture when playing seemingly any kind of video file in any application (vlc, media player classic, winamp, whatever) in Vista. I have the Vista codec pack installed.

The only way I've been able to get files to play is by using vlc and putting it in either Windows GDI or DirectX video output mode.

From what I've gleaned through much googling, this might be to do with hardware acceleration, but my 'change settings' tab (in Display Settings>Advanced Settings>Troubleshoot) is greyed out, so I can't do anything about that. At least I assume that's the case?

I thought this problem might have been caused by some recent Vista updates but a system restore to a point before they were installed failed to help. I haven't made any other major changes recently.

I can stream online videos with no problems whatsoever.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

Update/reinstall the video drivers. Then test again.

Thanks, Oddba11. I tried that (updated - drivers were up to date, and uninstalled / reinstalled), but I'm afraid it didn't work.

Apologies for the bump, but does anyone have any other suggestions for solving this?

    Thanks in advance.

DirectX issue possibly. Have you run dxdiag to see if everything is working properly?

I've just run it. It can't find any problems, although the drivers (igdumdx32.dll and ig10umd32.dll) date from 01/04/2009 - I don't know if that suggests they're out of date? Their version number is 7.15.0010.1637.

If the test was successful, it should be fine.

I would suspect then that there is some sort of odd configuration issue. I don't know what else to look at specifically as I've not seen this type of issue before.
