    First off, system specs.
    Windows ME
    pent 3
    512mb

I installed soundblaster PCI512 and a set of creative Inspire 4.1 Speakers. Since then My computer has noticable lag and there are high pitched beeps coming through my speakers whenever I multitask.
    Any suggestions.

Just a little more info. There also seems to be an overall slowdown of my computer(Desktop rendering slower, scrolling lags, etc)
    TIA, this is real frustrating.

have you checked in device manager to see if there are any errors of conflicts.

    Hey Jedi,
Yes I have the latest drivers and I have no conflicts. The speakers are working.
For example, if Im playing an mp3 and I open a window I get beeps and slowdown. I also cant play two sounds at once. For example, If Im playing a mp3 and a windows prompt comes up I get a beep like the system can handle that much input at the same time.
Also, when playing games whenever the sound gets intense it cuts out and I get short high pitched beeps.
    Any other suggestions? TIA

Have you tried uninstalling the card, and move it to a different slot, then reinstall it ?

If not try it, and see if it will pick up a different IRQ...

Because it sounds like it is having an IRQ conflict ( even though Device Manager isn't showing one ), Windows 9x and on up used a feature called "IRQ Stearing" or "IRQ Sharing" in which what this does, is if there aren't enough IRQ's available for a device it will share an IRQ with another device, thus causing in some cases a conflict...

No I havent tried that yet but I will. Thanks for the help Jedi. Youre helpful as always.
My comp has three PCI Slots and all are filled (the sound card, a video card, and a network card for my broadband). Is there any order that would work better or is it the same either way?

ok, I switched some PCI cards around and the problem remains. Im still getting a screeching sound. It seems to be caused by the overall slowdown that this change has brought on my comp. Not sure what to do.

As Jedi Master indicated, I believe you have a conflict as well, even though it is not obvious.....

start button, run, then type msinfo32 and hit ok....go to hardware, IRQs, edit, select all, edit, copy and come back and paste.

I like the first set of IRQs better........but am not sure that they are conflicting........

Your idea of returning it may be best......... :(
