Hi! I have just upgraded my M/b, CPU & RAM. Went through the (painful) procedure of re-activation (how many digits  ). Had to do a repair install to get XP to boot. While booting I noticed that the 'chasing lights' on the Windows flash screen had reverted back to green instead of blue, which indicates that I no longer have SP2 installed.

Visited MS Update. Was told SP2 was already installed. However, I have no icon for Security Centre either.

Any ideas!?

Darren

Specs:
MSi K8N mobo
Athlon 64
1GB ram
Numerous hdds and opticals
XP Home

Go here and download and save the HijackThis.exe file. Once you double-click it, it should create a folder for it in the C:\Program Files folder.

Run a scan with it, save the log in text format with Notepad, then post the entire contents of the log here.

Along with showing us what's running in the background and if any "nasties" are present in your computer, it'll tell us what version of Windows XP you're using.

According to your log, you're running the original version of Windows XP and not XP SP1 or XP SP2.

You're also running the original version of MIE 6.0 and not 6.0 SP1 or 6.0 SP2.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Before you post another log, click Edit in the Notepad window, then make sure that "Word Wrap" has a checkmark next to it. That'll allow your log to copy-and-paste properly and not broken apart as it is here.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - Startup(tab). Remove the checkmark from qttask.exe, then click Apply - OK. Don't reboot yet.

Click Start - Search - All Files And Folders, select the hard drive to look in, type in qttask.exe, then click Search. When the file appears, right-click it, then click Delete - Yes. Now, you can reboot.

When the SCU window appears during reboot, ingore the message. Place a checkmark in it, then click OK.

Great! :D

Once it's done, make sure to go into the Windows updates site because there'll be several critical updates waiting to be installed. (y)

forris, create a slipstreamed copy of your xp cd and sp2 in case you ever need to reinstall again.

I've used the program below several time and it works perfectly and is quite simple to use (freeby).

Download SimpleSlipper2
