In a matter of minutes, my wife's work inbox was flooded with over ten thousand spam emails last night, and it was still going strong when we went to bed. Her work is in there. She is literally going crazy! My question is, how can the IT department fix this? Can they batch delete all emails that came in at a certain time period. Otherwise, it will be impossible for my wife to delete or filter through all that. Can they fix this without loosing everything? I'm asking this because it's the weekend and she might have a lot of trouble reaching someone at work. I know we cannot help with work related issues, but it's only a question.

    Thank you

    What email client?

Others may have better ideas but if they have common email addresses (not likely) or words that would not appear in her legitimate emails, like "viagra", for example, do a search for all emails containing such words and then "select all" and delete. That way you can delete large blocks at a time without danger of deleting anything valid. :D

Thanks, Cookiegal. Unfortunately, it's coming from all over the place. And some even use legitimate titles. :(

You can search words in the content as well, not just titles.

If her work account is on a company's private mail server and she received little or no spam in the past, I would suspect that the server had spam filtering in place up until last night and it went away for one reason or another. Can she contact a coworker via phone or text message to see if they are having the same problem?

Is your wife accessing her work email with a web browser interface on the server or using email client software (MS-Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.) running on her computer? Programs like Outlook and Thunderbird have junk mail filters that can be adjusted to various sensitivities. They can usually be applied to existing emails in the inbox as well as new emails as they come in.

She is using Outlook from Office 365, online. She still hasn't managed to reach someone in the IT department, nor any contacts.

As you say, maybe the spam filter was temporarily offline last night, for some reason. The spam stopped. I manually deleted over 10000 emails myself today! It's now clean. Oddly, there doesn't seem to be any other way to do this. Ridiculous!

My wife will definitely have to get to the bottom of this. We wouldn't want this to happen again! What a nightmare!

You're welcome. I sure do hope it never happens again. Seems something must have been amiss because it's unusual to receive such a large volume of spam emails all at once.

For now, I'll mark this one as solved. We still don't know how this happened, but at least the spam is gone.

Do you know if it came from one source?

No, I don't. My wife hasn't had time to talk to someone about it at work. I'd like to know where all that came from.

Me too. I highly doubt it was from multiple sources if it all hit in one go.
