After installing a new backup drive (WD, Mac Essential, 1TB) for use with Time Machine, in addition to the backup icon, I have another icon, Backup.sparseimage 10.21 GB, appearing on the desktop. What is this? Do I need it and/or how do I get rid of it? Doubel-clicking on it brings up another copy of the backup.

    Thanks

Yes it is needed. That is a mountable image that contains your backup.

Sounds like the location of the image file could have been moved.
If you mount your Time Machine volume and look in the root level of it, do you see the sparse image there?
