Recently, my boyfriend opened a pop up on our computer that said we had a virus. Well, we didn't then, but now we do. I am trying to clean things up, have run ad-aware and spybot. I have also made a hijack this log, but my computer is so stopped up that I can't open internet explorer to post the log on this site (I am writing this at work). What can I do to get things unclogged enough to be able to use the internet to post the log? Are there certain things you can tell me to look for that I might be able get rid of without someone seeing the log. I AM DESPERATE! We have Windows XP. Please help.

I'm not an expert, but to get your initial Hijack This log onto the web, have you tried putting it onto a floppy or a usb memory stick, and then bringing it to work? i don't know if it'd be allowed with your work rules, but it might be worth a try. Hopefully an expert will be able to take a peek soon : )

You can also try downloading this little program to a floppy and running it on the infected computer. It may restore the Internet connection.

Download the LSP Fix and run it. Click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox. (Don't do anything else)

Then click Finish.

I had considered saving my hijack this log to a floppy and posting it on the site from another computer. However, I was concerned about spreading bad things from one computer to another, particularly since I don't know what exactly is going on. Is this a viable concern? Because it would certainly be easier for me to save the hjt log to a disk (providing my computer will cooperate at all, which is an uncertainty), and upload it from work or my notebook. I downloaded the LSPfix program and I will run it as soon as I get home. Hopefully, I can make some progress. Thanks.

Yes, there is the risk of propagation, especially since we don't even know yet what we're dealing with.

Try the LSP fix first and see if that will restore your connection and then we'll take it from there.

Ok, I'm online and I'm going to attempt to attach my hjt log. Cross my fingers! Thanks so much for your help. I will be very grateful for anything you can do!

There is a lot to do here so we'll do this in steps.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and Microsoft windows applications. choose “close to terminate the application”.....then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. Do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

I managed to e-mail the log above to my Dad, but I am completely unable to get on this website from my computer. It is much worse than it has been, and whatever is on there keeps me from posting on this site--I get an error message.

Download the Hoster from here . UnZip the file and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This may enable you to access the site.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then it will ask for a password enter bye (lowercase) then hit enter. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

I am sorry this is taking so long. I couldn't even get online long enough this weekend to get to the site you linked to above to download the program to help me stay on the internet (I am at work now). I am going to try to put it on disk and do it that way, so maybe I'll make some progress tonight. I made the logs you asked for and I will upload those if I can get online. If I cannot, is it safe to save the logs to disk and upload them from another computer? Or do you have enough informatin yet to make that determination? At this point, that is my only other option besides taking the computer somewhere to have it fixed. I have virtually no internet access. I can get online, but I get hijacked, or I get an error message that says the application has to be aborted and internet explorer shuts down.

There are many infections on this computer so I wouldn't take a chance on infecting another.

I'm a little confused here. Are we working on two different computer's (yours and your Dad's)?

No, we are only working on my computer. I was unable to access your website with my hijack this log last week, but I was able to get to my e-mail. So, I e-mailed the log to my Dad, who can access the site and he uploaded the log for me. Now, however, I can't get to anything. As soon as I get online, I get hijacked. So, I have no way to get anything from my computer to this website (or anywhere for that matter) unless I use a disk, which is apparently not feasible. I tried to save the hoster program that you suggested above to disk from my computer at work, but when I put it in my computer at home the disk appears to be empty. So, either I didn't save it properly, or my computer is playing games with me. I will try once again tonight with the hoster program to restore my internet capabilities, but if I can't I'm just going to take the computer somewhere or buy a new one. Thanks for your help.

OK. I downloaded the hoster to a floppy, but when I go to "Run" and then "Browse" the A drive is empty. So, I downloaded it again and saved it to floppy and the dialog box shows it as being there already. So, how do I open it on my computer?
