Hi there again

I seem to have been infected by something called SpySherrif. I have ran ad-aware, norton and a list of other removal applications. They did remove it, but it keeps coming back, along with what looks like some sort of porn link called *Access Members Area*

Please tell me how to get rid of this for good, it's really anoying me. It only put itself there yesterday and it won't go away, no matter what I try.

Thanks again :)

go to add/remove and uninstall spysheriff, look in c:\program files and delete its folder.

do you know what this is? if not have hijack this fix it and find and delete its file.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [supervisor.exe] E:\WINDOWS\supervisor.exe

Turn off spybot's teatimer until we're finished. also click on microsoft's antispware, clcik options/settings/clcik real time protection/ uncheck the top to boxes click save/exit. Then right click the microsoft icon on your bottom right and click shutdown!

http://metallica.geekstogo.com/smitfraud.reg

or here below if not working

Download this file: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg

Doubleclick smitfraud.reg and confirm you want to merge it with the regsitry.

have hijack this fix these entries. close all browsers and programmes before
clicking FIX.

Now reboot to safe mode find and delete these files and folders if there?

How to boot to safe mode

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default,
Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden
files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View
tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also
uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for
known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

E:\WINDOWS\system32\kernels32.exe
C:\winstall.exe----> this one is showing as c:\ but check also in E:\
E:\WINDOWS\desktop.html

download ccleaner and run it.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it.
Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you
can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

post another hijack this log and active scan logs

How's your computer running now any better?

go to add/remove and uninstall viewpointmanager, look to delete it's folder in C:\program files.

Download the pocket killbox

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

have hijack this fix these entries. close all browsers and programmes before
clicking FIX.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] "E:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\GameDrvr.exe" /startup "E:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0500.dll"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] E:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "E:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "E:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Find and delete these files and folders if there?

C:\Program Files\zango---> folder
C:\Program Files\SpySheriff----> folder

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Delete on
Reboot. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each
of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has
the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
It will ask for confimation to delete the file on next reboot. Click
Yes. It will then ask if you want to reboot now. Click No. Continue
with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of
these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box. Then click yes
to reboot after you entered the last one.

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not
exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you
don't miss any.

C:\winstall.exe
E:\WINDOWS\system32\kernels32.exe
E:\WINDOWS\system32\vx.tll
E:\WINDOWS\system32\vxh8jkdq2.exe
E:\WINDOWS\system32\vxh8jkdq5.exe
C:\Downloads\TheGameOfLife-dm[1].exe
C:\Downloads\LSLMCLTSetup-dm[1].exe

run ccleaner again

navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and
go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of
the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open.
Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of
the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under
"Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete
Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the
"Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Here's another lof file. I seem to have got rid of SpySheriff, even on re-boot, and changed my wallpaper back to my original setting. However, just one small problem remains, that I cannot get rid of, and that's.......

Access Members Area.exe

This is on my desktop, with a thumbnail of a womans face.........this came at the same time as SpySheriff.

Thanks for everything again and hope you can advise on getting rid of the above from my desktop. If I delete it, it just comes back on re-boot.

Hi there

ignore the above. After the last lot of instructions you gave me, I deleted Access Members Area.exe and emptied the recycle bin. Then I did a final re-boot, and now this has also gone. I seem to have got rid of SpySherrif as well, and all seems back to normal now. Let me know of anything else, before I put a *solved* on it.

Thanks for everything :)

ah, I missed this one, right click that icon on your desktop and delete it.

put these in the killbox, did you do the bottom one, of the two, if so just do the first one in the list below. Maybe boot to safe mode and do this?

E:\Documents and Settings\default\Desktop\backups\backup-20050628-205353-415.dll
E:\Documents and Settings\default\Desktop\SpySheriff.lnk

find and delete this file to, Access Members Area.exe, if it has a path like c:\ then put it into the killbox to.

How to boot to safe mode

How to show hidden files in Windows

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...Virus Corporate Edition&ver=8.x&osv=&osv_lvl=

Click "Apply" then "OK"

clean log. ok your welcome Meg fae Scoland! ;)

you should now turn off system restore to flush out the bad restore points and
then re-enable it and make a new clean restore point.

How to turn off system restore

here's some free tools to keep you from getting infected in the future.

to stop reinfection get these two tools, spywareguard and spywareblaster
from

www.javacoolsoftware.com

get the hosts file from here.

put it into :

Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

ie-spyad.Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected

when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

prevX: it stops spyware

http://www.prevx.com/prevxhome.asp

Use spybot's immunize button and use spywareblaster' enable
protection once you update it. you can put spybot's hosts file into
your own and lock it.

I would also suggest switching to Mozilla's firefox browser, it's safer, has a built in pop up blocker, blocks cookies and adds.

Read here to see how to tighten your security:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Delete on

the following line then click on the button that has the red circle with
the X in the middle. It will ask for confimation to delete the file on next
reboot. Click Yes. It will then ask if you want to reboot now. Click Yes.
