I'm on my friends computer and it's loaded with spyware. I tried downloading HJT to make a log but it asks me which program I want to open the file with. I'm not sure what to choose. I ran Ad-aware but it didn't seem to do a whole lot. Generally problems with a rouge search bar at the top of IE, double underlined links that lead nowhere and popups to online gambling sites.

    Thanks in advance.

Alright, update. I tried to find a reason why the HJT.exe wouldn't open automatically so I googled it and found something about making sure something in the registry was correct, and it was.

I used *.tmp,*.chk,~*.* to search for temp files to delete, I deleted some of them, other wouldn't delete. I uninstalled some obvious spyware programs from the control panel. I used Ad-aware and did a scan, some entries deleted while others would not.

I'm on my computer now. After tinkering with it for a while, some programs wont open up. For instance his Microsoft Calendar, when clicked, asks which program it should be opened with. This is the case for most of the icons on his desktop. Any solutions, please?

    • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
