Hi. There is spyware on my USB & now all the data is in a real threar to be remotely deleted.
The question is whether spyware is effective off line?
If it isn't effective off line, can it be removed ?

What is this USB device that you are having this issue with?
There are all kind of USB devices, i.e., head phones, speakers, thumb drives, hard drives and etc!

    Thanks My Tree
I think it is also called Flash Drive or Memory Stick which you use on lap top or computer.

Normally spyware, wants to send info home so yes there needs to an online connection.
That said, some spyware may collect data, while off line, then send when connection is made.

Spyware normally does not delete any thing, but you may have Ransomware, where one needs to pay to not have files deleted.

    Thanks my Tree
It isn't clear. The question has been if the spyware sends information off line?

The name of the user you are addressing is DaveA not MyTree. MyTree is part of his avatar image.

Nothing can 'phone home if it's not connected to the Internet.

There are ways to disinfect a flash drive. I suggest we move this to the Virus and Other Malware Removal where one of the specialists can guide you. It would probably be a good idea to have the PC checked as well since the malware had to come from somewhere.

I've moved this to the Virus & Other Malware Removal forum. Please note that you will have to reply in a more timely manner when receiving assistance.

Because the Malware Removal Specialists are very busy and when users take a long time to respond they don't know if they wish to continue or not. Trainees are limited in the amount of live cases they can participate in so it's even more important for them. Also, much can change with days in between responses that can compromise the attempt to clean the computer. Malware doesn't just sit dormant during that period.

It was moved. Your thread is in the Virus & Other Malware Removal forum. Unfortunately, no one has picked it up yet. Hopefully this will bring it back to the top where a helper will see it but of course it's the holidays.

I don't understand the reason for the sarcastic comment.

    Hiya Ogle

Sorry for the lateness in a reply, these forums can be very busy. Are you still having this problem? If so, can you do the following and we'll go from there:

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

    • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
    • Please copy and paste log back here.
    • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

    Thanks

    eddie
