I have downloaded all the software you told the previous person to download. I am up to the point of putting it into safe mode and following those instructions, but, of course, I want to make sure that I do the correct thing.

Thanks

Jeff

  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • It is a self extracting file.
  • Doubleclick the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your desktop.
  • Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install ewido.
  • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, have it clean anything that it cannot clean. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HijackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Thank you for your help! I ran everything like you requested. I deleted all the files that Activescan found, with the exception of one. I just want to make sure it is the correct thing to do before I delete it. That is the windows32/mydll.dll file. I also did not delete the last 2 files which are the process.exe files for for smitrem.

I have also included the latest HJT file.

It looks like I need to remove the HBO for SPYWARESTRIKER and also the file in it for the startup.

Two last things. There is a shortcut on the desktop for Spywarestrike that I am assuming that I shoud delete.

Lastily, there is a minor nuance that I would like you to please help me solve. There is a reminder that pops up every 15 days to purchase norton anti-virus, how and where can I turn that off.

Again, thanks for all your help!

Jeff:)

Hi Cookiegal,

Please don't get Fak Hakers post confused with mine. I still have a few open issues. If you could help me finalize mine, I would really appreciate it!

Also, I didn't run the trial period for the activescan, I just deleted the files. Is that okay?

Thanks,

Jeff

Please go ahead and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MYDLL.dll

Also, the smitrem fix was updated to include SpywareStrike probably after you had already downloaded it so please remove the one you already have, redownload it and go through the steps outlined in my earlier post again. There is no need to do Ewido and Panda again.

Also, would you see if you have these programs and if you do, delete them but let me know if they are there.

C:\Program Files\Program Files\Crystalys Media

C:\Program Files\Program Files\Video iCodec

Then reboot and post another HijackThis log please.

Why can't I see anyof my posts?

Anyways, I was able to remove SpywareStrike 2.5 and all of its annoyances.

I hope everything is gone.

Hope you have the same luck Jeff.

What other programs can I use to make sure my system it at it's best?

Free Spyware, Malware, and all that other stuff. I had spybot on but when the virus was active i think it corrupted the program so it wouldnt run right so i uninstalled it. Can I reinstall it again.

Last, I tried DL Firefox, while the virus was still present, and when the ActicveScan reported files from the Mozilla/Firefox folder, again is it safe to use now that the virus is no longer present?

Thanks

Hi Cookiegal,

Thanks again for your help. I redownloaded, smitrem and reran it. I don't think that it did anything different. The copy that I had I downloaded it right before my first post. But, since you requested I re-did it.

I deleted mydll.dll. I did a search for media and did not find the folder or the file. I also did a search for icodec and did not find it. These searchs were done only in the program file directory and subdirectories.

Yesterday I ran Microsoft AntiSpyWare and I looked at the report, it showed that SpyWareStriker is found. Should I let it correct it?

The Spywarestriker still has a shortcut on the desktop and also the quicklaunch menu. Should I just delete it from there?

I rebooted and reran HJT. Below is the post.

Disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware as it's probably interfering with the fix.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Click on Tools, Settings. In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.

Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).

Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).

After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Reboot to safe mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Then reboot and let me know if the problems are gone.

Hi Cookiegal,

I think that there might be a misunderstanding or I wasn't clear. The first time I did the steps, it removed the virus from the systray and the popup stopped. Not sure if it removed it completely from the system since 1) MS Antispyware found it after I thought that it was clean (I loaded MS antispyware after the first time I did the steps to clean it up). 2) The shortcut is still on the desktop, 3) the the shortcut is still in the quicklaunch menu, 4) the folders exist under programs, but it appears that there aren't and files in them and 5) from the start menu under programs there is a shortcut there still also.

But, like I said, nothing seems like it is overtly wrong.

I hope that this clarifies some of the stuff. Please let me know what to do next!

Also, I did stop MS Antispyware and reran smitrem as you requested.

Thanks for your time.

Jeff

Yesterday I ran Microsoft AntiSpyWare and I looked at the report, it showed that SpyWareStriker is found. Should I let it correct it?
I understood that MS Anti-Spyware was still flagging SpywareStrike.

You can delete those empty folders and all traces of SpywareStrike that you mentioned.

Now you should turn system restore off to flush out all previous system restore points, then turn it back on and create a new restore point:

To turn off system restore, on the Desktop, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a new restore point, click on Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools and then select System Restore.

In the System Restore wizard, select Create a restore point and click the Next button.

Type a name for your new restore point then click on Create.

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD for added protection.

Read here for info on how to tighten your security.

Delete your temporary files:

In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start - Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel - Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the recycle bin.

Hi Cookiegal,

I did all of the things that you requested above. (y)

There is one thing that I did not delete yet, there is a shortcut on the desktop for spywarestrike. When I go to delete it, it says this will only delete the shortcut and does not remove the program. So I click on add/remove programs and when I get to the list of programs, it is in the list with .03mb size. Does this mean that it is still on the computer?

On this computer I already run spyblaster, spyguard, adaware, spybot, AVG and MS Antispyware. I do appreciate the suggestions. It is also running the MS Shield program to show what is up-to-date and what is not. Is there anything else I need to run?

The virus protection software (I think it was AVG) caught the virus immediately and asked if I wanted it put in the virus vault, I first selected that, but then I chose delete it. That is when I think that I had the problem. I read somewhere that this virus trys to attach and then if you delete the files it launches another one to attach.

Okay, so what is next?

Thanks for your help!

Can you attach a screenshot of the pop you're getting to purchase Norton please.

Also, how many user profiles are there on this computer?

There are 4 user profiles on this computer. I can get a screen print of the pop next time it happens, which should be today. I got it yesterday and asked for it to remind me in 1 day (intead of the other option of 15). Not sure when it will pop but I will put it in here.

I cleaned up the temp files, etc on all of the accounts (through IE, but I didn't do the safe mode %temp% under each id, do I need to do that?).

I still have the one issue with SypWareStrike where there is a shortcut on the desktop. I can delete it but when I go to add/delete programs it shows up as installed and has a size of .03 MB. Should I get rid of this from here?

I also have some updates that need to be applied, but I don't want to do them until everything is done (or unless you say so).

Also, when or should I turn MS Antispyware back on?

Thanks Again!

Yes.

Wait until we're sure the machine is clean.

Leave it disabled until the machine is clean as well.

Please post a HijackThis log from each user account but one at a time so I can check them.
