Couple things to check... Go to your desktop. Right click My Computer >properties > advanced >performance settings. This should show you all the visual efffects. Make sure that all of them are checked. If so, then continue with step two. If not, check them all, hit ok and see if that changes it.

If not, close out of that and go back to the desktop. Right click on the desktop. (not on any icons). Go to properties. Click on the appearance tab. Make sure you scheme is set to Windows XP Style and not Windows Classic Style. That should make your taskbar back to the way you had it.

Does this affect all users on the machine or just you? If you are the only user, set up a new user and log in and see if it works or not. Could be your profile, could be windows is messed up.

I have not seen your other post so if this has not been tried already -

Use #117 from the following link. Click on the link and choose ‘Save’ or ‘Save As’ – depends on your browser. You should have a .reg file downloaded. Then follow the instructions for regedits from the top of the page.

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Before you do this save a backup of your Registry. Go Start – Run and type in – regedit. Under File you will see Export – click on this and make sure the dot is in ‘All’. Give it a name and save to where you can find it easily. If the fix does not work just double click on this file and your registry will be back as we started. If not required it can be deleted.

    Download Luna.zip:

    http://castlecops.com/zx/flrman1/luna.zip

Download it and unzip it to extract the luna.msstyles file
it contains. Copy the luna.msstyles file to the C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna folder.

Restart your machine and go to Display Properties and you should be able to choose the XP theme again.

Try running regedit.exe (including the extension .exe). Are you able to run regedit this way?

It could be a leftover of a virus.

Download and unzip BFUzip from http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip
Run the program and click the Web button.

Use this URL to copy into the address bar of the Download script window:

    http://metallica.geekstogo.com/p2pnetwork.bfu

Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.

If you have any questions about the use of BFU please read here:

    http://metallica.geekstogo.com/BFUinstructions.html

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Reboot and check if taskmanager, regedit etc are working as they should.

Let me see a Hijackthis log. Click here to download HJTsetup.exe:

    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe

    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

    • *Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • *By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • *Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the *Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
    • *Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • *Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • *At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • *Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    • *Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
    • *Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • *Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • *DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
