Recently, after cleaning up my Dell laptop (running Win 2K) of some viruses and adware/spyware that I'd been infected with, I started to get the following error message on start-up:

"File Missing: C:\Program or one of it's components is missing"

I can click on "Cancel" and the error message goes away and continues to boot to the login prompt. Everything seems to be working fine, and I haven't noticed any applications acting strange, however, I'm wondering if this error is important and what (if anything) I can do to fix it.

That does not appear to be the full message, but more than likely AdAware removed a file but not the start up entry.

    get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, put
it in a permanent folder (C:\HJT) , run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the
    log here.

    (y) Thanks for the tip, I'll give this a try when I get home this evening (it's my home computer, not my work computer here at the office). I'll post the Hijack results here as suggested.

    Full error message is:
"Cannot find file 'C:\Program' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."

So, I ran 'hijack this' and the results are as follows:

    I've had the same problem.
the registry value was deleted from ab default in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command\ It was originally "%1" %*
Unfortunately, I tried to revert the value by setting it back to what it originally was, and either it wasn't completed successfully or hasn't worked.
Also, one of my friends has the exact same problem. If her parents find out the computers bust she is in for it big time.
System restore won't work as it needs the applications to be able to run for it to run!

I will try a 'hijack this' this evening, what does all the text that it comes out with mean?

    Please help... we're screwed!

    (y) (y) First of all, a big thanks to MFDnSC for the assistance. I followed your directions and everything seems to be working properly. (y) (y)

For hacker103, the "text" refers to the logfile output from hijack this; each item that the program finds as "suspect" will be listed under the list of processes that are running on your machine. When you "check" the box next to each item, in the lower left hand corner of the hijack this window ("Scan and Fix stuff"), you'll see that the previously greyed out "Fix Checked" option is now in bold face. Once you select all the recommended items (after, of course, first posting the hijack this log file back to this forum so that one of the more experienced techies can you advise you of which items to remove), click on "Fix Checked" and, hopefully, your worries will be over !
