Recently my trusty old P166 Win98se System has started to show the add hardware wizard during boot up.
    Unknown hardware message.
Of course I havent added any hardware in years. :)
It does this 3 times during the boot up.
I click cancel each time and boot continues as usual.
Also the wizard comes up centered on screen twice and then the last one is in the top left corner. Go figure.....
Everything runs normally after the boot up.

    Any explanations out there?

I don't know why it's happening, but if it has just started in the last few days, try doing a scanreg /restore to a previous registry. Go to start>shutdown>restart in MS-DOS mode. At the c:\windows\> prompt enter:

    scanreg /restore

select a started registry which predates the problem.

You can also try some "clean boot" troubleshooting using msconfig....
