I'm trying to find out which processes and programs I can safely shut down or keep from starting at boot up when I want to run a resource hungry 3D game.

I haven't had a computer up and running in over a year and now have a system running Windows Vista Home premium, so I'm new to Vista.

With Windows 98 you could just kill all the processes except systray and explorer, but it looks like things have gotten a bit more complicated.
in control panel/programs/stop a program from running at startup/software explorer, what can I keep from starting? What needs to be running?

In the task manager I have 65 processes running. Which ones can I shut down and which ones need to be up and running? Maybe there's no quick answer, and if not, could anyone suggest some websites where I can research the issue? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the websites, KFPC. I don't get online as often as I would like so it took me a while to check my post. Now I've got some work to do...thanks again.
